Mohammad Amir Makes a Comeback in Pakistan’s T20I Lineup Against New Zealand

In a major development for Pakistan cricket, the nation has unveiled its squad for the much-anticipated T20I series against New Zealand. The series consists of five dynamic matches slated to commence on April 18.

Amidst exciting inclusions, the standout revelation is the return of pace bowler Mohammad Amir to international cricket after a hiatus of nearly four years. Amir last donned the national jersey in August 2020 and has since reversed his decision to retire from the sport. Joining Amir in the comeback trail is all-rounder Imad Wasim, who is also set to feature in the team after announcing his availability for selection once more.

Wahab Riaz, a member of the selection committee and senior team manager, expressed confidence in the choices during the official press statement issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). “The decision to include Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir was a straightforward one, given their availability for selection and considering Haris Rauf’s injury and Mohammad Nawaz’s current form. Both Amir and Imad possess undeniable match-winning capabilities, and we trust they will consistently deliver strong performances to bolster the team’s objectives,” Riaz stated.

The announcement also shines a spotlight on two emerging talents receiving their first call-ups to represent Pakistan in a T20I series. Irfan Khan, recently acclaimed as the Emerging Player of the Tournament, expressed his gratitude and determination upon his selection. “I am deeply honoured to have been selected in the Pakistan squad for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand. Breaking into such a formidable team like Pakistan is a testament to the dedication and effort I have put into my game. Now, my focus is on seizing this opportunity and solidifying my position within the team,” he conveyed.

Usman Khan, on the other hand, faced a recent ban by the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) for “misrepresenting” his intention to play for UAE and failing to meet the eligibility criteria required. However, his impressive performance with two centuries and equal half-centuries for the Multan Sultans in the previous Pakistan Super League did not go unnoticed. Overcoming the setback, Usman shared his excitement on the selection, “Being chosen to represent one’s country is the ultimate dream and goal for any athlete. Today, I am absolutely thrilled and filled with joy as the selectors have granted me the opportunity to be part of the upcoming series against New Zealand. This selection validates the relentless effort and dedication I have poured into my craft.”

Pakistan’s squad announcement for the upcoming series is a blend of experienced campaigners and fresh talent, determined to take the field against the Blackcaps. Under the leadership of Babar Azam, the squad assembles seasoned players and promising newcomers, namely: Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Iftikhar Ahmed, Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Usama Mir, and Zaman Khan. The non-travelling reserves comprise Haseebullah Khan, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Sahibzada Farhan, and Salman Ali Agha.

As the countdown to the series begins, the anticipation builds for cricket aficionados around the world. With Mohammad Amir’s resurgence and the induction of promising rookies, Pakistan looks to set the stage for a riveting cricket spectacle. The team anticipates crafting a narrative of victory and resilience, and the New Zealand series presents an ideal arena to showcase their mettle.
