Mohammed Shami likely to miss two matches in IND vs ENG Test series Surya doubtful starter for IPL | Reports

The Indian cricket team is grappling with pivotal roster challenges as two of its prodigious talents, Mohammed Shami and Suryakumar Yadav, face extended periods away from the pitch due to injuries. Reports indicate that Mohammed Shami, the formidable fast bowler, is likely to be absent for the initial two tests of the highly anticipated India vs England series, while prolific batsman Suryakumar Yadav is expected to miss the early stages of the Indian Premier League (IPL) owing to a hernia.

Mohammed Shami, recognized for his blistering pace, succumbed to an ankle injury which initially surfaced during World Cup 2023, where he was an instrumental figure for the team. Despite the tournament unveiling some of his most stellar performances, Shami is yet to commence bowling again. As he recovers, proving his fitness at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) remains a requisite before he can consider a return to international cricket. An unnamed source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) elaborated to the Indian Express, asserting, “Shami hasn’t even started to bowl, he will have to go to the NCA and prove his fitness. He looks doubtful for the first two Tests against England.”

Suryakumar Yadav, also known as SKY, mirrors Shami’s plight but with a different injury. The explosive T20 specialist is grappling with a sports hernia and has been earmarked for surgery in Germany, as per a Times of India report. The BCCI source disclosed to an English Daily, “SKY was recently diagnosed with a sports hernia. He is currently recuperating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. In two-three days, he will fly for Munich, Germany, to get operated on. It means that he certainly won’t be playing for Mumbai this season in the Ranji Trophy and is likely to miss the initial games for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.”

Prior to this, Yadav had sustained and subsequently recovered from an ankle injury sustained during a T20I encounter against South Africa. This injury had already removed him from contention for the squad participating in the series against Afghanistan. The estimated recovery period for such an injury, following a hernia procedure, spans around eight to nine weeks, casting significant doubts on when he might resume training and ultimately, gameplay.

Post his World Cup exertions, Shami had been granted respite from the national squad’s subsequent assignments. Albeit named for the series against South Africa, the medical team of BCCI did not give him clearance to play, intensifying speculation about his availability for the forthcoming games against England. The anticipated Test series kicks off on January 25, with the second match slated for February 2, but Shami’s participation hangs in the balance.

The absence of these champions deals a severe blow to the Indian cricket team’s strategic preparations. Shami’s extraordinary capacity to dismantle opposition batting line-ups, combined with Yadav’s ferocious batting prowess, are assets that will be sorely missed in the fixtures ahead. Recoveries that steer clear of any complications will be essential for both players, as their respective teams and fans fervently await their return to cricketing action. As the BCCI monitors their progress, it’s undeniably clear that the Indian cricket panorama is momentarily dimmed by the void left by these two athletes. Their journey back onto the field is eagerly anticipated by supporters, who hope to see their stars shine brightly once more on the international stage.
