Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has taken the significant step of indefinitely suspending veteran wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella following a doping violation detected during the Lanka Premier League 2024 (LPL). The 31-year-old cricketer tested positive for a prohibited substance, leading to immediate suspension from all forms of cricket, pending further notice, according to official sources.
The decision, announced on Friday, August 16, marks a serious turning point in Dickwella’s cricketing career. The Kandy-born player, celebrated for his prowess behind the stumps and his aggressive batting style, last appeared in an international game during a Test match against New Zealand in March 2023. Although he was included in the T20I series squad against Bangladesh earlier this year, he did not get a chance to play. As captain of the Galle Marvels in the LPL 2024, Dickwella showcased his leadership skills, driving his team to the finals, only to lose to the Jaffna Kings.
The failed doping test was conducted by the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA). The announcement from SLC emphasized the board’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport through regular, random testing in accordance with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines.
“The suspension is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice,” read the official SLC statement. “The test, conducted by the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA) during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024, signifies SLC’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the sport remains free from the influence of prohibited substances.”
The SLC also clarified that these measures are carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, in a bid to uphold cricket’s sanctity and integrity. This meticulous approach aims to make certain that the sport remains untainted by illegal performance-enhancing substances.
“This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and in accordance with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines, is aimed at ensuring that cricket remains free from the influence of prohibited substances. SLC, together with the Ministry of Sports and SLADA, conducts these tests during domestic tournaments randomly to safeguard the sport against anti-doping violations,” the statement further elaborated.

Niroshan Dickwella has had a notable career since making his debut for the Sri Lanka national team in July 2014. Over the years, he amassed 4,841 runs in 137 international matches, achieving two centuries and 32 fifties. However, this isn’t the first time he has faced a suspension. The SLC previously penalized him for a bio-security bubble breach during Sri Lanka’s tour of England in 2021.
The current suspension comes as an unexpected blow to both Dickwella’s career and the Sri Lankan cricket community. While doping violations are a serious matter and warrant strict penalties, the indefinite nature of this suspension adds an extra layer of uncertainty around his future in international cricket.
This case has once again highlighted the significant risks and severe consequences athletes face when they choose to or accidentally consume prohibited substances. It also reinforces the importance of awareness and education regarding anti-doping regulations to all players, both emerging and established, to ensure clean sport.
Given the exceptional circumstances, it is expected that the SLC, along with relevant authorities, will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, and Dickwella will be given a fair chance to provide his explanations and any potential mitigating factors. The weight of the suspension lies not only in the duration but also in the potential impact on Dickwella’s career and standing within the sport.
This development also raises questions about the robustness of internal controls within teams and franchises participating in high-profile tournaments such as the LPL. Ensuring stringent compliance with anti-doping guidelines remains paramount for the credibility of cricket.
As the cricketing world watches closely, the outcome of this suspension will serve as a crucial precedent for handling doping violations in the future, reinforcing the message that no player, regardless of stature or experience, is above the law when it comes to the sanctity of sport.
In the meantime, the Sri Lankan cricket team continues to prepare for future tournaments without one of its experienced players, focusing on building a team ethos based on clean sport, discipline, and competitiveness.
