PCB appoints Yasir Arafat as high performance coach ahead of New Zealand series

The cricket landscape is abuzz with the latest appointment from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as former cricketing allrounder Yasir Arafat steps into the role of high performance coach. This strategic move comes at a pivotal time, just ahead of Pakistan’s high-stakes T20I series against New Zealand.

Yasir Arafat will soon join the Pakistan squad, a force of 17 players in Lahore, before accompanying the team to the land of the long white cloud. The series is scheduled to commence on January 12, with the opening T20I set against the picturesque backdrop of Auckland’s Eden Park.

Arafat, age 41, bears the experience of international cricket, with appearances in three Test matches, 11 ODIs, and 13 T20Is. Hailing from Rawalpindi, he has been an instrumental player for Pakistan. He was a member of the Pakistani ensemble under the captaincy of Shoaib Malik, which reached the finals in the inaugural ICC World Twenty20, ultimately conceding victory to India. Furthermore, his contributions were vital in Pakistan’s triumph in the ICC World Twenty20 in England in 2009.

Yasir is set to replace the current high performance coach, Simon Helmut, with preparations taking place in Australia. A source disclosed to PTI that Yasir’s appointment was influenced by the recommendation from Muhammad Hafeez, the national team’s director. Hafeez seems to be playing a critical role in these decisions, even over the team captain, Shah Masood.

The forthcoming tour of New Zealand is not just another series; it is layered with significance. Notably, it will mark the commencement of Shaheen Shah Afridi’s captaincy in T20I matches. Afridi has garnered praise for his leadership with the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

This tour is also of crucial importance as a precursor to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. With Pakistan having captured the title in 2009, the team is undoubtedly looking to use this series as a springboard towards replicating that success.

Pakistan’s robust T20I squad is replete with talent and ambition, eager to demonstrate their prowess on the pitch. The team includes Shaheen Shah Afridi as captain, alongside Aamer Jamal, Abbas Afridi, Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Haseebullah Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan as the wicketkeeper, Mohammad Wasim, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Usama Mir, and Zaman Khan.

The excitement surrounding this appointment and the upcoming series reverberates through the cricketing community. Fans and analysts eagerly await the outcomes of these matches, not just for their immediate results but for the insights they may provide into Pakistan’s future strategies heading into the T20 World Cup.

With the squad announced and the coaching team now bolstered by Yasir Arafat’s expertise, Pakistan seems ready to tackle the challenges that lie ahead in New Zealand. As the cricket world eyes this dynamic encounter, both teams prepare to write the next chapter in their storied rivalry. The outcome of this series could very well set the tone for Pakistan’s cricketing endeavors for the next pivotal year, building towards what fans hope will be another World Cup-winning performance.
