Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav’s Hilarious On-Field Banter Steals the Show at Duleep Trophy

Several top cricketers from the Indian cricket team made their much-anticipated appearances in the opening round of the Duleep Trophy 2024. With India’s grueling Test season just around the corner, Test hopefuls are keen to catch the eye of national selectors to earn a place in the squad.

Star players like Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, among others, featured in this season-opening domestic tournament, setting a competitive tone from the outset. Despite the intense competition, the matches were not devoid of light-hearted moments that provided comic relief to fans and players alike.

In a particularly memorable encounter during Day 4 of the India A versus India B match held at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav were involved in back-to-back instances of friendly banter. This exchange occurred during the second innings of India A’s batting, where Kuldeep Yadav partnered with Akash Deep and batted while the team was seven down. As R Sai Kishore readied to bowl the 41st over, Pant and Kuldeep engaged in a playful exchange of words.

Pant humorously directed his fielders with, “Sab upar rehan single ke liye saare (Stay in the 30-yard circle for the single).” Kuldeep, caught in the jest, replied, “Mai nahi lunga (I won’t take the single).” Pant, doubling down on the fun, said, “Kha le maa kasam nahi lega (Swear you won’t take it).” This amusing interaction was captured on video and quickly went viral, delighting cricket fans everywhere.

The camaraderie between the two did not end there. A few overs later, with Musheer Khan into the attack, Pant again invoked some friendly banter. This time, Pant wanted Kuldeep to take a single, contrary to his earlier suggestion. As Musheer bowled his over, Pant chirped, “Isko single lene de, bahot tagda plan banaya hai (let him take a single, we have a great plan).

.” Kuldeep, keeping up with the humor, replied, “Theek hai yaar, kyu parsehan ho raha hai (It’s alright mate, why are you so worried).” Pant, ever the jokester, retorted with, “Out ho na jaldi (Get dismissed then quickly).”

Eventually, Kuldeep was dismissed in the 48th over off Washington Sundar after steering a catch to Musheer Khan at cover, having scored a determined 14 runs. Despite India A’s spirited efforts, they ultimately failed in a 275-run chase, losing the game by 76 runs. The top order faltered significantly, with KL Rahul’s gritty 57 being the standout contribution amidst the collapse. Akash Deep showcased some late resistance, blasting 43 runs off 42 balls, garnished with four sixes and three boundaries, but the target proved to be insurmountable.

Musheer Khan emerged as the star of the match, bagging the Player of the Match award for his outstanding performance. His first-innings score of 181 was an instrumental knock that helped lift India B from a precarious position. Speaking after the game, a jubilant Musheer credited his meticulous preparation and previous form. “My preparation was really good with my father. I had done well in Ranji, so I knew I could get an opportunity here. Every ball, I was encouraging him from the non-striker’s end to play it out. I think it was only the first or second time for me to take catches at short leg,” Musheer said, reflecting on his significant partnership with Saini.

The opening round of the Duleep Trophy not only highlighted the fierce competition among India’s cricket hopefuls but also offered glimpses of the fun and lighter side of the game through moments like Pant and Kuldeep’s banter. These instances underscore the unique blend of camaraderie and competitive spirit that defines cricket, endearing it to fans around the world. As the tournament progresses, all eyes remain on those vying for a coveted spot in the national Test team, promising more thrilling cricket and moments of joyful banter.
