India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, has been showcasing exceptional form in the ongoing ODI World Cup. During India’s thrilling match against New Zealand in Dharamsala on Sunday, the seasoned opening batsman achieved a remarkable feat. Rohit Sharma became the first Indian player and the third overall in cricket history to smash 50 or more ODI sixes in a single calendar year. Prior to Rohit, this rare milestone had only been reached by South Africa’s AB de Villiers and the West Indies legend Chris Gayle.

Rohit accomplished this feat by dispatching New Zealand pacer Matt Henry for a mighty six in the second over of India’s pursuit of a 274-run target.

List of Batters with 50 ODI Sixes in a Calendar Year:

AB de Villiers (2015) – 58 sixes
Chris Gayle (2019) – 56 sixes
Rohit Sharma (2023) – 53 sixes
While chasing the target, Rohit Sharma played a blazing innings, scoring a rapid 46 runs before being dismissed by Lockie Ferguson in the 12th over.

After the match, Rohit Sharma expressed his thoughts, saying, “Good start to the tournament. Job is half done. Important to stay balanced. Not to think too far ahead. Important to stay in the present. Shami took the opportunity with both hands. He has the experience in these conditions and is a class bowler. At one stage, we were looking at 300 plus. Credit to our bowlers at the back end. I am enjoying my batting. Both are different personalities but we (Him and Gill) complement each other. Happy that we won. Nothing much to say. He (Kohli) has done this for us so many years. He backed himself to do the job. Kohli and Jadeja pulled us back when we lost a few wickets in the middle.”

In the same match, Daryl Mitchell delivered a sparkling century, guiding New Zealand to a total of 273 runs against India. New Zealand’s innings had a shaky start, but Mitchell (130) and Rachin Ravindra (75) put on a partnership of 159 runs, helping the team regain momentum. This partnership became the highest for any wicket at a World Cup match between the two teams, surpassing the previous record of 136 runs set by Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth in 1987.

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami played a vital role for India in the final 10 overs, securing figures of 5-54 in his debut appearance at the tournament. Ravindra departed in the 34th over, but Daryl Mitchell continued his charge to reach his fifth ODI century.
