In another part of the IPL’s playing fields, Sam Curran, the skipper for Punjab Kings, was met with a severe penalty as well—being fined 50% of his match fees. His offence was attributed to a Level 1 breach involving dissent to an on-field umpire’s decision during the tight-knit clash with Gujarat Titans. Curran, who admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, accepted the match referee’s sanction as stated in the IPL release.
Apart from the monetary fines, both captains dealt with disappointing performances from their respective teams. Royal Challengers Bengaluru now stare at a premature end to their campaign, having been virtually knocked out of the tournament. Following their nail-biting match against KKR, they find themselves in a position where winning all their remaining games would only bring them to a total of 14 points—not a guarantee for a playoff spot. Their recent attempt saw them chase a mammoth total of 223 runs served up by the Knight Riders, only to fall heartbreakingly short by just one run, with their scoreboard freezing at 221.
On the flip side, the Punjab Kings still have a sliver of hope to cling to—though they too find themselves in dicey waters. The Kings have suffered a bleak run of home defeat, with a sequence of four losses at Mullanpur. Their recent encounter with the formidable Gujarat Titans ended in dismay, as the opponent successfully chased down 143 runs in the final over of the match.
