‘Selectors should stop overestimating Shreyas Iyer’s talent’: Ian Chappell blasts India batter

There has been a significant shift in the composition of the Indian Test cricket team as the selectors, after an extended run, have opted to omit middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer from the squad. Iyer’s exclusion comes in light of his less-than-stellar performance in recent matches, where he managed an average of just 19 across his last 10 innings. With a top score of 35 in this stretch, his presence in the batting lineup has been questioned, particularly as other players knock on the doors for selection.

Shreyas Iyer embarked on his Test career with an impressive century and a half-century in Kanpur against New Zealand. Following that remarkable debut, he continued to show promise with four fifties over his next six matches. However, his form took a concerning dip, resulting in negligible contributions across seven subsequent matches. Iyer’s struggles were not solitary; teammate Shubman Gill also endured a rough patch until his timely century in the second innings at Visakhapatnam, which arguably saved his spot in the team at a critical juncture, whereas Iyer found himself side-lined.

Amid these developments, former Australian captain Ian Chappell voiced his relief at the change in India’s squad, especially regarding Iyer’s omission. Chappell accused Indian selectors of overestimating Iyer’s abilities. In contrast, he lamented the noticeable absence of star player Virat Kohli, which he regards as a substantial loss for the Indian team. Chappell’s commentary comes from his column penned for ESPNCricinfo, where he highlights India’s team strength and leadership under Rohit Sharma.

Chappell also expressed hope that the team would re-evaluate its estimation of players like Kuldeep Yadav, who he feels deserves more recognition for his wicket-taking abilities. His assessment doesn’t leave out the acknowledgment of India’s formidable opponents; Chappell suggests that while India has the advantage as hosts and could potentially clinch the series win, they need to be cautious of an indomitable England side eager to battle it out on the field.

As the narrative of the Indian Test team evolves, the spotlight shifts to the players waiting for their chance. KL Rahul’s imminent return to the squad following his recovery from injury is highly anticipated. Similarly, the rise of Sarfaraz Khan in domestic cricket circles has made him a likely candidate for the middle-order role left vacant by Iyer’s departure. Khan’s impressive performances have caught the attention of selectors and fans alike, setting expectations high for his potential debut in the Test arena.

The national selection panel’s decisions continue to intrigue cricket enthusiasts as they shape the team’s dynamic with an eye on future challenges. While the exclusion of a player can often spur debate, it also opens doors for emerging talent to step up and prove their mettle on the international stage. As India prepares for the upcoming matches, all eyes will be on the new and returning faces to see who rises to the occasion and solidifies their position in the highly competitive world of Indian Test cricket.
