Shoaib Malik addresses ‘match-fixing rumours’ reveals why he left Bangladesh Premier League midway

In the midst of the fast-paced and often unpredictable world of cricket, former Pakistani captain and experienced all-rounder Shoaib Malik encountered controversy, following his abrupt exit from the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Rumors quickly swirled around Malik after his sudden departure from the tournament, where he was playing for the Fortune Barishal team. Speculation was rife with match-fixing conjectures after the team’s owner, Mizanur Rahman, went on a private television channel suggesting that Malik’s performance in a particular match against the Khulna Tigers warranted scrutiny from the Anti-Corruption Unit, especially after he bowled three no-balls in one over.

The air was thick with suspicion and rumor after these comments, conjuring an image of nefarious activities behind the scenes. However, Shoaib Malik was quick to respond to the growing allegations. Malik refuted claims that his contract with Fortune Barishal had ended on the back of these match-fixing allegations and labeled such reports as entirely baseless. He clarified the circumstances of his leave in a definitive manner. “I would like to address and dismiss the recent rumors circulating about my playing position with Fortune Barishal. I had a thorough discussion with our captain, Tamim Iqbal, and we mutually planned the way forward. I had to leave Bangladesh for a pre-committed media engagement in Dubai,” Malik stated formally.

Recognizing the gravity of the allegations, Malik underscored the need for caution when addressing such speculative claims. “I want to emphasize the importance of exercising caution when it comes to rumors, especially those circulating recently. I want to make it clear that I strongly refute these baseless rumors. It’s crucial for everyone to verify information before believing and spreading it. Falsehoods can harm reputations and create unnecessary confusion. Let’s prioritize accuracy and rely on credible sources to ensure a clear understanding of the facts. Thank you for your understanding and diligence,” Malik further explained as an appeal to the public conscience.

The situation escalated when the franchise owner, Mizanur Rahman, was informed that the Anti-Corruption Unit was taking interest in the case concerning Malik’s no-ball incident. His initial skepticism was apparent. “If it is done (ACU investigation), it would be good because three no-balls in one over bowled by an off-spinner is looking really absurd to me, and we lost the match there,” he commented on Channel 24. Later, Rahman conceded that he shouldn’t have made such statements and expressed regret, especially since he had not anticipated the broadcast of his remarks.

Mizanur Rahman did, however, confirm that the franchise had indeed parted ways with the veteran all-rounder. The timing was essential, as Malik’s commitments in Dubai would keep him busy until February 6, making it impossible for him to participate in the crucial matches scheduled after February 14. “Our main games are after that [14th], so it won’t help if he comes on 6th and so I said ‘we don’t need you’,” Mizanur admitted.

Despite the tumult, the owner of Fortune Barishal expressed his support for Malik in a social media post: “Last few days we are hearing a lot about Shoaib Malik. I deeply protest against it, and he is a good player, and he had given his best for our team, and so we don’t want to discuss it any further.”

The franchise is looking ahead, focusing on the remainder of the BPL season with the aim of improving their position in the standings. Fortune Barishal was holding the sixth spot in the seven-team competition with a single win from three matches at the time of Malik’s departure. The team and its supporters will be eager to dismiss the recent unrest, concentrating instead on returning to their winning ways.
