Shubman Gill top open Rohit Sharma at No 3? Ex-India opener suggests radical change for 2nd Test

Team India suffered a narrow defeat in the first Test of their five-match series against England, a result that underlined concerns about the stability of their batting lineup in the longest format. The match, held in Hyderabad, saw England bounce back after trailing by 190 runs in the first innings to ultimately secure victory by 28 runs. Much of the credit for England’s comeback goes to Ollie Pope’s stellar second-innings knock of 196, propelling the visitors to a lead of 230 runs.

This collapse isn’t an isolated incident for the Indian team; the batting lineup has shown vulnerability several times recently, including during tours in South Africa, at home against Australia, and in the World Test Championship. Whether playing in familiar conditions or overseas, Indian batters have repeatedly struggled to adjust. The scrutiny now intensifies for Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, with both their positions in the squad being questioned.

The spotlight, in particular, falls on Shubman Gill. After switching from an opening role to batting at number 3 before the West Indies series, Gill has been unable to capitalize on his new position, gathering just 142 runs in eight innings at an unimpressive average of 17.75. Before this switch, Gill occasionally took the opening slot in Test cricket, with his sole venture at number three in 2021 against New Zealand marking his highest score at the position with 47 runs.

Amidst this unsettling phase, former India opener Wasim Jaffer has floated a new strategy which could potentially bolster India’s batting potency. Jaffer suggests that Rohit Sharma, the current Indian captain, drop one spot to number three, allowing for a stronger opening pair.

“Gill and Jaiswal should open and Rohit should bat at no.3 in 2nd test in my opinion. Waiting to bat for his turn isn’t helping Shubman, it’s better he opens the innings. Rohit plays spin really well, so batting at no.3 should not worry him too much,” Jaffer expressed on social media.

This suggestion comes ahead of the upcoming Test in Vizag, where Shreyas Iyer must also seize the chance to prove his mettle. With the absence of KL Rahul and the impending return of Virat Kohli from the third Test onwards, Iyer faces what could be his last opportunity to cement his place in the team.

In addition to the existing conundrum, injuries plague the Indian squad with Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul being ruled out of the second Test. Potential replacements have been named, and there’s a buzz around Sarfaraz Khan’s impending Test debut, as expressed through various reactions on social media.

The challenges for Team India are not only confined to batting but also extend to squad composition amidst injuries and recovering players. However, the Vizag Test presents an opportunity for India to regroup and address their batting woes, possibly by considering Jaffer’s advice or finding other successful combinations. The pressure is on the batters to step up and navigate through the crucial moments that often dictate the direction of a Test match.

Whether the proposed changes in the batting order will come to fruition remains to be seen, but what’s clear is that the Indian team must find a solution soon. As the next match approaches, all eyes will be on how India tackles these persistent batting troubles and if they can turn their fortunes around with a revamped approach at the crease.
