The last three four months were challenging for me mentally: Sanju Samson

In a remarkable showcase of skill and determination, India clinched a commanding series victory against South Africa with a spectacular performance in the third and final ODI. Thursday marked a special day as India, under KL Rahul’s captaincy, secured their first ODI series win on South African soil in five years, thanks largely to Sanju Samson’s incredible maiden international century. The 29-year-old from Kerala delivered when it mattered the most, making 108 runs off 114 deliveries while batting at no. 3 in the picturesque Boland Park in Paarl.

This century was not just a number on the scoreboard; it was the end of a period of inconsistency and challenge for Samson. Having debuted in international cricket back in 2015, Samson has struggled to find a permanent spot in the Indian lineup across formats. His absence from the World Cup 2023 squad and exclusion from the T20I series preceding the T20 World Cup added to a tough phase in his career fraught with uncertainty.

However, Samson’s mental fortitude shone through these trials, leading to his incredible innings after 14 ODIs that brought his struggles full circle. His match-winning knock was recognized with the Player of the Match award, a testament to his resilience and talent. Following his performance, Samson revealed the mental challenges he faced over the past months, saying, “The last three, four months were challenging for me mentally.” He added that despite the difficulties, he focused on the process, taking it one ball at a time, which culminated in his scoring the match-defining century.

While Samson’s success has illuminated his potential, his knock was particularly special as it came from the position typically held by star batter Virat Kohli, only adding to the significance of his contribution. KL Rahul, in acknowledging Samson’s success, noted the challenge of finding room for talented players like Samson in a lineup brimming with established cricketers. Rahul praised Samson’s performance, expressing delight for the batter and recognizing his IPL form, which had yet to be reflected at the international level due to limited opportunities. Rahul stated, “Pleased for Sanju, he’s been a phenomenal performer in the IPL over the years. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to give him the chance at No. 3, because obviously there are stalwarts in the ODIs who occupy those key spots. Glad he was able to grab his chances here.”

As India celebrates its series triumph, the cricketing world also witnesses a few farewells and new beginnings. Notably, former South Africa captain Dean Elgar will be retiring from international cricket after the ongoing series against India. In other news, Australian cricketer and IPL star recently underwent surgery, raising concerns about his participation in IPL 2024. Virat Kohli’s abrupt return to India due to a family emergency and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s exclusion from the Test series due to injury are also among the stories making headlines.

As India relishes this victory and Samson’s personal success, the dynamic nature of cricket continues to present its array of challenges and opportunities. Players like Sanju Samson embody the sportsman’s spirit, overcoming personal battles to shine on the world stage. His century not only vindicated his selection but provided a beacon of hope for many cricketers waiting in the wings for their moment to prove their mettle on the international scene. The story of Sanju Samson is one of talent meeting opportunity, resulting in a spectacular performance that cricket fans will remember for years to come.
