Yearender 2023: From memorable ODI WC to breaking Pakistan’s world record top moments in Indian cricket

The year 2023 was chock-full of achievements and memorable events for Indian cricket. Starting off the year with One Day International (ODI) battles against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, the Indian team, led by captain Rohit Sharma, wove a tapestry of unforgettable cricketing moments as the months unfurled.

Entering the ODI World Cup as one of the favorites, the Indian squad lived up to the hype, tearing through the opposition with such ferocity that they set a new Indian record for consecutive World Cup victories. After dismantling the Netherlands to record their 9th straight win, they surpassed their previous best of eight consecutive victories achieved in 2003. The Indian juggernaut charged through to the final, overcoming a resilient New Zealand team in the semifinals, only to be halted by Australia in the championship match.

The ODI Asia Cup, meanwhile, showcased an Indian team in fine fettle, securing yet another prestigious title to their name. Mohammed Siraj, in particular, made headlines with his lethal bowling, leaving the Sri Lankan batsmen in disarray in the final. Siraj’s fiery spell of 6 for 21 helped dismantle Sri Lanka for a meager 50 runs, paving the way for an emphatic victory for India, clinched by the unassailable opening duo of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma.

Indian prowess was not limited to the ODI format. The Test arena bore witness to the Indian team’s dominance too, specifically against the formidable Australians. Having previously upset Australia in their own backyard in 2018/19 and 2020/21, India secured a historic fourth consecutive Test series win over the Aussies, cementing their place in the annals of cricketing history as the first team in three decades to achieve such a feat.

One of the glittering crowns of individual achievements was placed on the head of Yashasvi Jaiswal. The youngster made an indelible impression in his first Test series against the West Indies. His innings of 171 runs etched his name in the record books as the first Indian opener to score a century on Test debut outside Indian soil.

Team records also tumbled. The Indian T20 international squad outshined in the shortest format, winning 15 out of 23 matches in the year, thereby surpassing Pakistan’s world record for the most T20I victories—a testament to India’s growing supremacy across all formats.

A historic debut was made at the Asian Games cricket event, an arena previously uncharted by Indian cricket. Displaying their characteristic dominance, the Indian team cruised past Nepal and Bangladesh in the initial knockout rounds. Despite the final against Afghanistan being washed out by rain, India clinched the Gold medal, with their superior ranking serving as the decider. In an inspiring parallel, the Indian women’s cricket team also captured gold, marking a golden double at the Asian continental event.

The tales of triumph in Indian cricket for the year 2023 were not only a demonstration of skill and perseverance but an assertion of India’s evolving dominance in the world of cricket. From commanding performances in ODIs and T20Is to breaking barriers and setting new standards, the Men in Blue have left an indelible mark in cricket history books this year. As the sun sets on an eventful year, the groundwork has been laid for greater glories and higher aspirations for Indian cricket going forward.
