Unveiling Elegance: An Ode to Parameshwar Raju’s Calligraphic Marvels

Last weekend, as the fervent celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi culminated with the immersion of Ganesha idols in Hyderabad’s Hussain Sagar, a different form of cultural immersion took place within the opulent confines of Hotel Marigold. Art aficionados gathered to celebrate the mesmerizing world of calligraphy as artist Parameshwar Raju unveiled a compilation of his exquisite works.

The event marked the launch of the 425-page magnum opus, “The Wonderful Calligraphy of Poosapati Parameshwar Raju,” a collaborative endeavor with acclaimed art historian Koeli Mukherjee Ghose. This colossal tome, weighing an impressive four kilograms, is a vivid tapestry interwoven with 457 images of Parameshwar’s original creations, chronicling his extraordinary 40-year artistic odyssey.

At the heart of this monumental work lies a profound narrative, penned by Koeli, that goes beyond delineating a biography. It delves deep into the ethos of Parameshwar’s art and life, offering insights only an artist with Koeli’s storytelling prowess could provide. The convergence of their talents brings forth a vibrant tale of creativity, passion, and heritage.

Koeli shared an enthralling anecdote at the book launch, setting the tone for the immersive experience the book promises. The opening chapter recounts an evocative train journey where Parameshwar, seated cross-legged with unwavering focus, deftly wielded his calligraphy pen. His penmanship, displaying perfect thin-thick-thin strokes, captivated fellow travelers, though Parameshwar remained engrossed in his art, unaware of their curious glances.

Drawing on the timeless iconography of traditional symbols and myths, Parameshwar imbues his work with a contemporary allure through bold, striking strokes. The pages of the book are alive with vivid images of Ganesha, Krishna, Anantashayana Vishnu, Mahishasura Mardhini, Anjaneya, Vanaras, and more, all rendered in arresting red minimalism. Parameshwar’s art transverses the realms of sthalapurana (the mytho-historical narratives of specific locales), iconography, and epic tales, crafting a unique visual language that bridges antiquity and modernity.

Of particular note is Parameshwar’s mastery over the intricate ‘pothis’ — an advanced and challenging form of writing that demands precise control over space and proportion. This form has opened new vistas in his calligraphic journey, allowing him to innovate while honoring tradition.

Born in Andhra Pradesh, Parameshwar’s tryst with calligraphy began with the Devanagari script, gradually expanding to encapsulate his rich cultural legacy. His early works featuring the sacred symbol of Aum evolved into intricate pictorial narratives that reflect his roots. Over two decades, Parameshwar has intricately woven Puranic lore into his art, showcasing gods and deities merged with elements such as vahanas (sacred vehicles) and ayudhas (divine weapons).

Koeli’s narrative emphasizes how Parameshwar’s artistic expression flourished within the constraints of calligraphy.

. What might seem limiting to a figurative artist, Parameshwar embraced and transformed into a celebrated art form. His precise thin-thick-thin strokes, combined with his consistent use of the color red (symbolizing Shakti), create powerful narratives spanning mythological epics, childhood memories, and modern icons.

Reflecting on her journey with Parameshwar, Koeli recounted their first meeting in 2003 when she was a city art curator. Parameshwar entrusted her with his portfolio, seeking her insights. Koeli recollected, “Looking at his works, I felt an overwhelming sense of calm. It was art for art’s sake, an empowering experience.” She admitted that initially, comprehending his intricate forms was challenging. “Whenever I probed for explanations, it only led to laughter. His art required me to undertake my own research. Over time, through perseverance, I navigated his artistry and understood its nuances,” she shared.

Parameshwar acknowledged the intricate process behind his creations, noting that artistic inspiration isn’t a flash of divine intervention. “Ideas emerge from extensive observations. A mental image forms which we then draw. Explaining this creative process is complex, hence, I leave the narrative to Koeli,” he said, eliciting laughter.

The book emerges not merely as a document but as a tribute to a genre initiated single-handedly by Parameshwar. His work has proudly placed India on the global calligraphy and contemporary art map.
