Behind the Scenes: Aamir Khan Orchestrated Actual Intoxication for Iconic ‘3 Idiots’ Scene

A delightful scoop from Bollywood emerged as actor R. Madhavan, during a candid discussion on an episode with BeerBiceps, recounted an instance from the filming of the beloved movie, ‘3 Idiots’. In the 2009 cinematic hit, Madhavan co-starred with Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film not only garnered critical acclaim but also became a box-office triumph, celebrated for its inventive humor blended with a socially relevant message.

Among the numerous amusing episodes that ‘3 Idiots’ presented, one stands out for being a testament to the actors’ dedication to authenticity. In a memorable scene where the characters Rancho, Raju, and Farhan, inebriated, cause uproarious havoc outside their professor’s residence, the actors were, as revealed by Madhavan, genuinely under the influence, an idea proposed by their co-star, Aamir Khan.

Expanding further on this humorous incident, Madhavan shared the thought process behind their approach to portraying on-screen drunkenness. “Aamir’s idea was that in drunk scenes, you should never act like you’re drunk. You should drink and act like you’re normal,” he said. As per the plan, the actors began drinking by 8 PM to synchronize their performance with the shooting schedule initially set for 9 PM. However, an unforeseen delay due to an issue with the lighting setup meant that the shoot was pushed back by two hours.

Resolved to maintain their intoxication at a steady level, the trio continued to indulge, not taking into account the chilling Bangalore weather that affected their state more than anticipated. By the time they were set to film, despite thinking they were in control, the actors struggled to recite their lines, leading to prolonged takes and an unexpectedly challenging, yet hilariously genuine, capture of the scene.

Aside from this interesting tidbit from the past, talks about a sequel to ‘3 Idiots’ have surfaced, piquing the interest of the audience. The excitement was fueled further when a promotional video for an advertisement showed Aamir, Madhavan, and Sharman, hinting at the possibility of a sequel during a mock press conference scenario. The trio even reunited in February to support Sharman’s venture into Gujarati cinema with the film ‘Congratulations’.

As for R. Madhavan’s recent professional strides, he has been receiving acclaim for his antagonistic role in the movie ‘Shaitaan’, appearing alongside Ajay Devgn and Jyotika. Prior to this venture, Madhavan showcased his acting prowess in ‘Dhokha: Round D Corner’.

The revelation about the behind-the-scenes drinking session adds another layer to the cherished ‘3 Idiots’, a film that has left an indelible mark on the hearts of its audience. It is a testament to the lengths actors can go to breathe truth into their art, sometimes blending reality with fiction for the perfect scene. Fans can only await with bated breath for any formal announcement regarding the much-anticipated sequel and hope for more such instances of genuine camaraderie and craft. In the meantime, Madhavan continues to explore varied characters, leaving his mark on the silver screen with every performance.
