Choreographers Sumesh Sundar and Jishnudas: The Creative Geniuses Behind Amal Neerad’s ‘Bougainvillea’

In the bustling world of Indian cinema, where storytelling is elevated by every element from direction to music and choreography, there emerges a dynamic duo whose recent work has captured the imagination of audiences across the nation. Sumesh Sundar and Jishnudas, choreographers at the forefront of contemporary Indian dance, have once again lit up the screen with their breathtaking moves. This time, they return under the illustrious banner of director Amal Neerad’s upcoming film, ‘Bougainvillea,’ scheduled to release in cinemas on October 17.

These talented choreographers first gained national attention with their work on ‘Bheeshma Parvam,’ a sleek, engaging mafia narrative headlined by the legendary Mammootty. Besides the compelling storytelling and the charismatic presence of Mammootty, the film’s success was complemented by the unique musical compositions and background score of Sushin Shyam, and most notably, the intense choreography by Sumesh and Jishnudas. Their innovative approach set a new standard in dance choreography within the film industry.

Operating from their creative base at their dance studio ‘Myself and My Moves’ in Thrissur, Kerala, Sumesh and Jishnudas have continued to make waves with their creative methodology. The studio started as a dance community in 2016 and has since witnessed rapid growth, producing several notable performances that have found their way into mainstream media.

Their latest venture, the promo song ‘Sthuthi’ from ‘Bougainvillea,’ is a testament to their skill in blending diverse dance styles. With over 2.5 million views on social media platforms and counting, ‘Sthuthi’ is quickly becoming a viral sensation. The song brings together the vocal harmonies of Sushin Shyam and Mary Ann Alexander, deliciously interwoven with the poignant lyrics penned by Vinayak Sasikumar, a repeat collaborator from their ‘Bheeshma Parvam’ days.

Jyothirmayi, the graceful partner of director Amal Neerad, has earned accolades for her performance in ‘Sthuthi.’ Known for her energetic display in past hits like ‘Chingamaasam’ from ‘Meesha Madhavan’ and the sensuous ‘Osama’ from ‘Sagar Alias Jacky Reloaded,’ Jyothirmayi’s transformation in ‘Sthuthi’ showcases her flair for exploration and adaptability in dance. Sumesh praises her for seamlessly adopting new styles in her dance repertoire with zeal and enthusiasm, echoing the creative synergy in her collaboration with both Sumesh and Jishnudas.

The song intricately weaves hip-hop, house, whacking, and Afro styles, crafted meticulously to match the song’s underlying dark tone. “The choreography is not just about fast-paced dance moves; it’s an artistic fusion that respects the song’s distinctive rhythm,” explains Sumesh.

. “We conducted a rigorous 10-day rehearsal to make sure every move was polished to perfection,” he adds.

Kunchacko Boban, a veteran known for his dance prowess, effortlessly brings life to the song with his captivating performance. Initially teaming up with Sumesh and Jishnudas on ‘Bheeshma Parvam,’ their artistic collaboration with Boban has grown into a magnificent spectacle for the audience. “After our previous endeavor, we looked forward to working again with Chackochan [Kunchacko Boban]. Thanks to Amal ettan’s commitment to quality, we managed to create something truly special together,” Sumesh recalls.

Director Amal Neerad has always been an admirer of fascinating dance styles. He takes an active interest in contemporary trends, often sharing select dance videos with the choreographers as references. This allows Sumesh and Jishnudas the creative freedom to blend those elements into their unique choreography, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.

Jishnu reflects on the challenges and ultimately satisfying experience of working on ‘Bougainvillea.’ With lyrics that invoke divinity in phrases like ‘Karthavinu sthuthi’ (Amen to the Lord), the choreographers were tasked with creating a piece that was both innovative and reverent. “Working with Amal gave us the freedom to be innovative and deviate from conventional steps,” Jishnu notes. “Chackochan, despite a hand injury, committed himself passionately, ensuring every dance move was executed with the right finesse.”

The camaraderie within the team from ‘Bheeshma Parvam’ reuniting for ‘Bougainvillea’ added an aura of familiarity and comfort, enhancing the creative process. With a strong bond formed through shared creative visions, Sumesh and Jishnudas have once again proven that when choreography meets passion and innovation, it can capture the hearts and minds of all who witness it.

This choreographing duo’s remarkable journey, from running a burgeoning dance studio in Thrissur to creating international buzz through high-profile cinematic projects, continues to inspire both established and budding artists. Among their filmography are notable works like ‘Paltu Janwar,’ ‘Oru Thekkan Thallu Case,’ and ‘Anchakkakkollan,’ with Jishnu winning the Kerala State Film Award for Choreography with ‘Sulaikha Manzil.’

As fans eagerly anticipate the release of ‘Bougainvillea,’ it’s clear that Sumesh and Jishnudas, through their nuanced and evocative choreography, are set to make waves yet again, further solidifying their place among the modern maestros of dance in Indian cinema.
