Darshan Kumaar: Slept on a mat to get the body posture of my character right

The cinematic landscape is often a reflection of society’s most pressing narratives, and yet again, a film has emerged to weave these tales into a gripping work of art. Making headlines today is ‘Kaagaz 2,’ a new release that promises a nuanced exploration of contemporary issues through the eyes of an Indian Military Academy (IMA) student, portrayed by the critically acclaimed actor, Darshan Kumaar. Audiences may remember Kumaar from his recent compelling performance in ‘The Kashmir Files,’ and expectations are high as he steps into another challenging role that is sure to captivate viewers.

‘Kaagaz 2,’ directed by an auteur with a sharp eye for social phenomena, delves into the labyrinth of problems triggered by rallies and protests, probing their resounding impact on the common man’s life. The film’s trailer showcases Darshan Kumaar in a remarkable display of sharp stunts and heartfelt acting, hinting at a layered narrative to unfold on the silver screen.

In preparation for his role, Kumaar submerged himself into the world of an IMA student, an experience he found both enlightening and transformative. “I began by learning to march, a fundamental aspect of my character’s discipline,” Kumaar shared in a recent conversation. “To truly embody the posture and form of an IMA cadet, I even slept on a mat during the preparation period and engaged in intensive reading sessions.”

His commitment to authenticity also took Kumaar to the rugged terrains of Ladakh – a symbolic journey, where understanding the life of army personnel was key to his character’s portrayal. “The highlight of the trip was hoisting the national flag alongside the brave men in uniform,” Kumaar recalled with pride. “It was also where I initiated the film’s journey, marking it with the ceremonial first clap for the shot.”

The actor’s passion for the project resonates with the director’s vision. Satish Kaushik, who helms the directorial reins for ‘Kaagaz 2,’ commented, “This film is a tribute to our real heroes – the army people.” The sentiments of honor and respect for the armed forces are deeply woven into the film’s fabric.

Darshan Kumaar believes that the strength of ‘Kaagaz 2’ lies in its multifaceted storytelling. “This film does not shy away from tackling an array of issues – be it the fervent idealism of today’s youth, the familial turmoil wrought by modern-day divorces, or the intricacies of parent-child relationships,” Kumaar explained. “Audiences are in for a full package – a confluence of emotions, drama, and an unwavering social message.”

Always one to gravitate toward meaty, content-driven narratives, Kumaar has positioned himself as an actor unafraid to engage with complex material. ‘Kaagaz 2’ aligns perfectly with his artistic ethos, as it spotlights the importance of ethical coexistence and cautions against the perils of self-advancement at the expense of others. The film is set to grace theatres on March 1st, 2024, and is anticipated to spark discussions and reflections on the themes it espouses.

On the other end of Kumaar’s spectrum of work is ‘Dhokha – Round D Corner,’ his most recent film prior to ‘Kaagaz 2.’ This suspense thriller, directed by Kookie Gulati and featuring actors such as R. Madhavan, Khushali Kumar, and Aparshakti Khurana, was brought to life by producers Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Dharmendra Sharma, and Vikrant Sharma. Having hit cinema screens on September 23rd, 2022, the film unfurled a fast-paced narrative of an urban couple’s life, keeping the audience at the edge of their seats.

As Darshan Kumaar moves from strength to strength, carving his niche in the film industry, ‘Kaagaz 2’ stands as a testament to his dedication to the craft of acting and his relentless pursuit to tell stories that matter. With its heart set on portraying real-life heroes and societal dilemmas, the film beckons the audience towards a cinematic rendezvous filled with thought-provoking action and heartfelt emotion.
