Exclusive | Sharib Hashmi thought working in Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hain Jaan would bring him more work but ‘it didn’t’

In the world of glittering lights and cinematic dreams, actor Sharib Hashmi’s journey through Bollywood’s unpredictable terrains reflects a tale of talent, perseverance, and the elusive nature of success. Known for his dynamic acting skills, Hashmi became a familiar face following his role in the hit film ‘Filmistaan’, but it was his debut in the Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ that many believed would catapult his career to new heights. In a candid conversation, Hashmi reveals the stark reality behind the curtains.

Despite sharing the screen with Bollywood’s baadshah, Sharib Hashmi found that his big break was not the open door to endless opportunities many might assume it to be. Charting his career trajectory, Hashmi spoke of the aftermath of ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, expressing his initial optimism. “When the film was released, I felt that I would get a lot of work after a big movie, but I had no clue that I would have to give interviews and meet people,” he said. The ripple of appreciation he felt did not translate into the wave of job offers he had hoped for. Compounding this was an unexpected consequence related to his on-screen character – people mistook him for being Pakistani, which further complicated his position in the industry.

The tide turned with ‘Filmistaan’, a film that received critical acclaim and won Hashmi much-deserved recognition. It was this project, Hashmi admits, that became the turning point in his life, helping solidify his reputation and drawing more work his way. Yet, the unpredictability of the film industry continued to shadow his journey. “There is actually no formula and set pattern that we can jot down,” Hashmi shared. Post-Filmistan, despite his positive expectations, he encountered stalled projects and distribution challenges that sent him back to the drawing board, auditioning and contending with rejections that were all the more bitter after having tasted success.

Hashmi’s resilience bore fruit, and he found a second wind with his role in the acclaimed web series, ‘The Family Man’, which reinstated his position as a sought-after actor. He acknowledges this change in fortune with humility, attributing his renewed success to divine kindness.

His experience working with Shah Rukh Khan was nothing short of magical, he reveals. Perhaps as a beacon of the charm that Bollywood is known for, Hashmi affirms, “If you are already his fan, when you meet him, you fall in love with him.” Khan’s ability to make everyone feel special became a cherished memory in Hashmi’s professional life.

Looking forward, Sharib Hashmi harbors ambitions that span beyond the scope of acting. He expresses a desire to direct, even possibly taking on a dual role by acting in his directorial debut. Recently reveling in his antagonistic roles in ‘Vikram Vedha’ and ‘Afwaah’, he admits a craving for a “bhayankar badass” role, something intense and larger-than-life akin to the film ‘Pushpa’, that would showcase his talents in a whole new light.

Sharib Hashmi’s story, articulated with openness and frankness, paints a picture of Bollywood as an industry where the shimmer often overshadows the struggles. His experiences underline the reality that while the right role can indeed be a game-changer, there is no predetermined path to stardom, and success is often a blend of timing, talent, and the tenacity to navigate the unforeseeable waves of showbiz.
