From ‘G.O.A.T’ to ‘Vettaiyan’: The Tamil films to look forward to in 2024

The year 2024 is shaping up to be a landmark year for Tamil cinema, both in terms of storytelling innovation and box-office expectations. With an array of superstars such as Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith Kumar, Vijay, Vikram, and Suriya gracing the silver screen with their releases, the stage is set for a cinematic extravaganza not witnessed since 2010.

Sivakarthikeyan’s much-anticipated science fiction endeavor, Ayalaan, kicks off the year, showcasing groundbreaking VFX work and marking the return of Isha Koppikar to the Tamil film industry. Judging from the trailer, the film promises to be a high-concept yet family-friendly tale that will captivate younger audiences.

Indian cinema icons make a grand comeback with Indian 2, reuniting Kamal Haasan with director Shankar nearly three decades after the original. As glimpses suggest, the sequel will continue Senapathy’s crusade against corruption. Anticipation is high for Shankar’s synergistic new collaboration with music composer Anirudh Ravichander and the fabled impact of the original film.

Alongside Ayalaan for the Pongal festivities is Dhanush’s Captain Miller. Directed by Arun Matheswaran, known for his intense storytelling, the film boasts a stellar cast including Shiva Rajkumar and Priyanka Arul Mohan, with the promise of a rugged, revolutionary narrative. With an IMAX release, the film represents the fruitful collaboration between Dhanush and composer GV Prakash.

Sriram Raghavan makes a return to his Tamil roots with the bilingual neo-noir thriller Merry Christmas, starring Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi in lead roles. Katrina’s Tamil debut and a trailer hinting at taut suspense are the perfect early gifts for cinema enthusiasts.

Epic in scope, Suriya’s Kanguva, directed by Siva, presents itself as one of India’s most expensive films to date, promising a visual spectacle with 3D and IMAX releases. With this being Suriya’s first major theatrical outing in almost two years, expectations are sky-high.

The sequel to the striking Sarpatta Parambarai is on the horizon, with director Pa Ranjith and actor Arya gearing up for a much-anticipated theatrical release, aiming to recapture the streaming success of its predecessor on the big screen.

Thangalaan, also directed by Pa Ranjith and featuring Vikram, is set against the backdrop of the British colonial era in India and revolves around a tribe’s struggle and will mark Parvathy Thiruvothu’s return to a Tamil theatrical release after eight years.

Surprising collaborations abound, with Sivakarthikeyan’s 21st film, temporarily titled SK21, receiving production backing from none other than Kamal Haasan and helmed by Rajkumar Periasamy. Sai Pallavi joins as the female lead with music by GV Prakash, elevating the anticipation.

Vijay’s sci-fi spectacle The Greatest of All Time (GOAT), directed by Venkat Prabhu, teases a possible dual role for the star amid other enthralling collaborations. With an ensemble cast, the film features the triumphant return of Sneha alongside Vijay after 22 years and composer Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Ajith Kumar’s upcoming film with director Magizh Thirumeni, titled Vidaa Muyarchi, is swathed in secrecy, with details scarce but boasting an ensemble cast including Trisha and Arjun.

Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan, under the directorial expertise of TJ Gnanavel, will see a cherished reunion with Amitabh Bachchan after 32 years, with additional powerhouse performers like Fahadh Faasil and Manju Warrier.

Vetri Maran’s sequel to Viduthalai continues the narrative, with Soori and Vijay Sethupathi expected to answer the compelling questions left by the first installment.

Smaller budget films are also causing a stir, with Soori’s lead role in Kottukkaali set to premiere at the famed Berlin International Film Festival. The children’s film Vaazhai by Mari Selvaraj and Vignesh Shivan’s Love Insurance Corporation are among the anticipated releases, while fans eagerly await further news on the anticipated collaboration between Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam in Thug Life.

This year, Tamil cinema promises a thrilling mix of high-stakes blockbusters and compelling independent ventures, setting the stage for a remarkable year on the big screens.
