From Small Screen Stardom to Political Aspirations: Rupali Ganguly Joins BJP

Television’s beloved actress Rupali Ganguly, renowned for her memorable roles as Monisha Sarabhai in the iconic sitcom “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai” and the eponymous lead in the hit serial “Anupamaa,” has added a new chapter to her multi-faceted life by venturing into the political arena with her recent induction into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Born into a family deeply rooted in the movie industry, Rupali grew up with the influence of her father, the lauded director Anil Ganguly, and the footsteps of her choreographer brother, Vijay Ganguly.

Rupali’s journey in the limelight commenced when she was merely eight, appearing in her father’s 1985 feature film “Saaheb.” She continued to grace the screen as a child artist in the 1987 film “Mera Yaar Mera Dushman.” Like many actors seeking diverse opportunities, she dabbled in Bollywood with movies such as “Do Ankhen Barah Hath” and “Angaara,” both released in 1997. Unfortunately, her Bollywood expeditions did not mirror the success she hoped for, with both films underperforming at the box office.

The actress’s trajectory took a fortunate turn when she debuted on television with “Sukanya” in 2000. However, it was her role as Dr. Simran Chopra in the 2003 medical drama “Sanjivani: A Medical Boon” that marked her first significant breakthrough on the small screen. Her genuine performance and relatable portrayal of characters cemented her place in the entertainment industry, leading to roles in several other popular television shows including “Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii,” “Kkavyanjali,” and “Baa Bahoo Aur Baby.” Furthermore, Rupali’s versatility was on display when she stepped beyond Hindi serials to act in the Telugu film “Premante Inte” and Bengali movie “Eti.”

The first season of the Indian edition of the renowned reality show “Bigg Boss” saw Rupali as one of the participants, adding yet another dimension to her already diverse career. The show, which garnered massive attention and was ultimately won by actor Rahul Roy, further boosted her popularity and solidified her celebrity status.

Today, Rupali Ganguly enjoys immense popularity thanks to her role as Anupamaa in the eponymous drama “Anupamaa.” The show, which has surpassed 1200 episodes, features a star-studded cast that includes Sudhanshu Pandey, Madalsa Sharma, and Gaurav Khanna. According to a report by BollywoodLife.com, Rupali’s success and acclaim as Anupamaa have made her the highest-paid actress on television, with her reportedly earning a staggering Rs 3 lakh per episode.

Behind the scenes, Rupali’s personal life is filled with love and partnership. She is married to Ashwin Verma, a former insurance executive who forewent his career in New York to join Rupali’s life journey as her husband and a filmmaker. The couple took their vows in February 2013 and have since welcomed a son named Rudransh into their family.

As Rupali Ganguly embraces this new political venture, her fans and peers from both the entertainment industry and the political sphere are eager to see the impact she will make on the national stage. Her transition from a revered television star to a member of one of India’s leading political parties marks a significant shift, expanding her realm of influence beyond the confines of the screen. Supporters of Ganguly look forward to witnessing the blend of passion, empathy, and tenacity she has displayed in her acting career manifest in her service to the public and the nation.
