Gerard Butler to reprise ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ role in live-action remake

In what can only be described as a cinematic homecoming, Gerard Butler is gearing back into Viking armor to bring Stoick the Vast to life once again in the upcoming live-action remake of the beloved animated franchise, “How to Train Your Dragon.” The Hollywood Reporter has lit the beacon with news that Butler will revisit his renowned role as the chieftain and father of Hiccup, the protagonist of the saga that made an indelible mark on animated film history.

Riding alongside Butler will be a fresh-faced cast, including Mason Thames and Nico Parker as the intrepid duo Hiccup and Astrid, respectively. The cinematic flight is scheduled to take off on June 13, 2025, with Universal steering the ship.

The “How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy, a DreamWorks Animation cornerstone, has etched its place into both the hearts of audiences and the annals of box office success, with a global haul of $1.6 billion across its three chapters released between 2010 and 2019. This financial and critical triumph was brought to life through the eyes of Viking boy Hiccup and his feral yet endearing dragon companion, Toothless.

Adapted from Cressida Cowell’s whimsical books, the story arcs have traced the unlikely friendship and burgeoning maturity of a young Viking, faced with the challenge of bridging worlds and changing perspectives. At the heart of this narrative is Hiccup’s relationship with Stoick the Vast—a burly, bearded figure symbolizing strength, paternal love, and eventually, the shift from staunch traditionalism to progressive acceptance.

The announcement of the live-action remake has kindled a sense of nostalgia and hopeful anticipation among fans. Butler’s return to his role as Stoick, a character whose journey in the animated trilogy embodied leadership, sacrifice, and the paternal complexity of letting a child forge their own path, is a move that suggests a faithful homage to the source material.

Helming this intrepid return to the Isle of Berk is none other than Dean DeBlois, who is anticipated to bring the same directorial vision and emotional depth to the live-action remake as he did to the original trilogy. DeBlois’ craftsmanship, now enriched with advanced visual effects and theatrical realism, has fans eagerly awaiting this adaptation.

With Gerard Butler’s return to the franchise being a unique draw, the feature has the potential to not only reignite the passion of long-standing admirers but also to invite a new generation into the fold. The expansion of the “How to Train Your Dragon” universe into live action promises an immersion into Norse legend like never before—an enchanting blend of myth, kinship, and aerial adventures bound by vivid storytelling.

Much like its fusillade of fire-breathing dragons, this reinvention aims to conquer the skies—and the box office—with a blend of epic nostalgia and a fresh retelling. Audiences will indeed be watching to see if it manages to soar to the same beloved heights as its animated forerunners.

As the release date looms on the horizon like a dragon perched on a craggy cliff, the anticipation is palpable. One thing is certain, the skies over Hollywood will be alight with fiery expectation as the Vikings and their dragons once again take flight into cinematic history. Now it remains to be seen whether this new live-action tale will solidify its place in the dragon lore, echoing Stoick’s own token words: “With Vikings on the backs of dragons, the world just got a whole lot bigger.”
