‘Ghajini 2’ on cards? AR Murugadoss reveals meeting Aamir Khan on ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ sets; sparks speculations on sequel

Over the last few years, speculations have been rife that a sequel to Aamir Khan’s blockbuster 2008 film, Ghajini, directed by AR Murugadoss, is being planned. A report had also mentioned that the makers are planning on making it in both Tamil and Hindi, with the star of the original Tamil film, 2005’s Ghajini, returning to headline the Tamil version.
Now, Murugadoss, while promoting his upcoming film with Salman Khan, Sikandar, has shared a rather interesting update on the much-awaited sequel. Stating that he has some ideas for the film, Murugadoss even revealed that he met Aamir on sets of the supestar’s upcoming movie, Sitaare Zameen Par.
In a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Murugadoss said, “We have some ideas. Right now, we all are busy with our respective projects. Once we get time, we will sit and discuss.”
“When I came to Mumbai first, I met him before I started the shoot of Sikandar. I met him on the sets of Sitaare Zameen Par and we discussed something. After that, we often spoke over the call,” he added.
That the director and the superstar are currently in touch has added more to the speculations surrounding Ghajini 2.

Meanwhile, in an interview with The Times of India, Murugadoss spoke about how Sikandar too has a surprise element like the love story between Aamir and Asin in Ghajini.
“This is not only a mass film; it has strong family emotions. Ghajini was about a boyfriend-girlfriend love story, but this is about a husband-wife relationship. It explores how families function today, how couples treat each other, and what we might be missing in our relationships. That will be the highlight of the film. Though Ghajini seemed to be a psycho thriller to the audience, the love story of Aamir and Asin was the surprise element. Similarly, here there’s an element of love which will move the audience,” TOI quoted Murugadoss.
Notably, earlier this year, producer Allu Aravind, whose production banner Geetha Arts produced Ghajini, had expressed a desire to make a sequel. Mentioning how Ghajini earned over Rs 200 crore at a time when Rs. 100 crore seemed impossible, Aravind said, “In the middle of the film, he (Aamir) challenged us on the sets and this will be the first Rs 100 crores film.
“We were wishing like that. Ghajini is the first film to do Rs 100 crores. Now, Rs. 100 crores is equivalent to Rs 1000 crores. I want to make a Rs 1000 crore film with you (Aamir), maybe Ghajini 2,” said Aravind.
But what’s so special about Ghajini? The 2005 Tamil film and its 2008 Hindi remake are undoubtedly a special milestone in the careers of their lead stars, Suriya and Aamir.
The story follows a former businessman suffering from short-term memory loss who seeks to take revenge for the brutal murder of his girlfriend. In both the languages, Asin played the female lead while Pradeep Ram Singh Rawat played the antagonist.
The Tamil version of Ghajini won 9 Tamil Nadu State Film Awards in 2005, including Best Film, Special Award for Best Actor (Suriya), and Best Music Director (Harris Jayaraj). The Hindi version became the first Bollywood film to cross the Rs 100-crore mark at the box office, eventually becoming the highest-crossing Indian film of all time, a record it held until 2009’s Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots surpassed it.
