Historical Drama ‘Maharaj’ Shines Light on Social Reformer Karsandas Mulji

Junaid Khan, starring in the recently released film *Maharaj*, has garnered a warm reception from audiences and critics alike. This compelling historical drama dives deep into the monumental 1862 Maharaj Libel Case, one of India’s most critical legal battles, and throws light on the life and times of the social reformer Karsandas Mulji.

In a candid conversation with ANI, Junaid Khan shared his admiration and inspiration drawn from portraying Karsandas Mulji. “He was a real person who in 1862 was talking about those things which are happening even today. It happens in society today. And it happens in every society. And he was fighting about it during that period. So I found the character and the story very inspirational, that there is a man who had so much understanding back then,” Junaid expressed passionately. He emphasized the timeless relevance of Mulji’s struggles and convictions, making the character not merely a historical figure, but a symbol of enduring social justice.

Discussing what initially pulled him towards this ambitious project, Junaid recounted his journey from theater to the silver screen. “I used to perform in dramas since 2017 and have been called for movie auditions as well. Siddharth sir and Aditya (Chopra) sir called me after seeing an audition of mine. When I listened to the story, I really liked it,” he revealed. His transition from stage to film seems particularly fitting for a role that demands a nuanced and impassioned depiction of real-life heroism.

The film’s director, Siddharth P Malhotra, also opened up about the emotional ride of bringing *Maharaj* to life. Reflecting on his first encounter with Junaid’s theatrical talent, Siddharth stated, “I was influenced by his (Junaid) character when I saw his play. It was released 4-5 years ago. It was a Gujarati drama.

. Vipul Mehta directed that play, and he is also the co-writer of this film. When I saw the play, I said, this is the story of a journalist. He used to live in Baikala.” Siddharth saw a powerful narrative waiting to be translated to film, finding a kindred spirit in Junaid, who could embody the resilience and courage that defined Mulji’s legacy.

“Maharaj” also faced hurdles leading up to its release. A temporary stay imposed by the Gujarat High Court put the film’s debut in jeopardy. However, this legal obstacle was eventually removed, prompting Yash Raj Films (YRF) Entertainment to express their gratitude in an official statement. “We are immensely thankful for the support and can now share our work with the audience,” the statement read, underlining the production team’s perseverance and commitment to storytelling.

The film boasts an ensemble cast including Jaideep Ahlawat and Shalini Pandey in significant roles, with a special appearance by Sharvari. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced under the banner of Yash Raj Films (YRF) Entertainment, *Maharaj* promises to be not just a film, but a cinematic experience that resurrects and honors the voices of unsung heroes, like Karsandas Mulji, who championed the cause of social reform against daunting odds.

During their interaction, both Junaid and Siddharth underlined the modern-day implications of historical events. Karsandas Mulji’s crusade against social injustices in the 19th century resonates with current societal issues, making his story relevant even in contemporary discourse. “Things that were considered wrong at that time but are right today — so I said, this is the story of an unsung hero that should be told,” Siddharth concluded. His words reflect a broader aspiration to bridge past and present, creating a dialogue that educates and inspires future generations.

The audience’s warm reception of *Maharaj* underscores the film’s success in casting light on an essential chapter of Indian history. By bringing Karsandas Mulji’s story to the big screen, Junaid Khan and the creative team behind *Maharaj* have ensured that his legacy as a vanguard of social reform will not be forgotten. The film stands as a tribute to those who, like Mulji, dared to challenge societal norms and advocate for truth and justice, making it a must-watch for history enthusiasts and cinephiles alike.
