Hollywood stars Denzel Washington Michael J. Fox among President Biden’s final Medal of Freedom honorees

President Joe Biden has awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to a distinguished group of 19 individuals, including two Hollywood icons — Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox. The Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to American culture, society, and global leadership.
Michael J. Fox, beloved for his roles in Back to the Future, Family Ties, and Spin City, received the honor for his decades-long advocacy for Parkinson’s disease research.
Diagnosed with the condition in 1998, Fox has inspired millions with his resilience and philanthropy through the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has raised over $1.75 billion for Parkinson’s research. Entering the East Room in a wheelchair, Fox stood with assistance to receive the medal from Biden, smiling and clapping during the ceremony.
Denzel Washington, a two-time Academy Award winner known for his powerful performances in films such as Glory and Training Day, was celebrated not only for his acting career but also for his work as a philanthropist and minister. Washington recently obtained his minister’s license and emphasized the importance of faith in his life.
The honorees also included former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, humanitarian and U2 singer Bono, fashion designer Ralph Lauren, “Science Guy” Bill Nye, basketball star Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, humanitarian chef José Andrés, conservationist Jane Goodall and international football star Lionel Messi, among others.
Posthumous awards were given to civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, former Defense Secretary Ash Carter, and Robert F. Kennedy, among others.
Biden praised the recipients as “extraordinary people” whose contributions have shaped America’s culture and future.
