Aparna Malladi, the multifaceted actor-director-producer who hailed from Hyderabad, breathed her last in the early hours of January 2 in Los Angeles, USA. The 54-year-old award-winning filmmaker whose career spans over two decades was diagnosed with cancer four years ago. She moved to the United States around two years ago for treatment. According to a source close to her family, she initially responded well to the treatment but cancer relapsed two years ago.
Aparna’s last Telugu feature film Pellikuturu Party (2022) starred Prince Cecil, Aneesha Dama, Arjun Kalyan and others. She earlier directed the feature films Mitsein (German word for ‘to be with’), The Anushree Experiments, a short film titled Nupur, and the web series Posh Pories.
Her short film Nupur won the Family Award at the USA Film Festival, Dallas, and her debut feature film Mitsein (German word for ‘togetherness’) won Best Art Feature award from the Eugene International Film Festival.
Having studied filmmaking at the San Francisco-based Film Arts Foundation, Aparna taught screenwriting in various film schools and universities. She is known to have supported and guided several young writers and directors in the Telugu film industry.
