Ilaiyaraaja debuts symphony ‘Valiant’ in London’s Eventim Apollo Theatre; fans call it ‘a surreal experience’


Renowned music composer Ilaiyaraaja enthralled audiences at the Eventim Apollo Theatre in London as he debuted his much-anticipated symphony, Valiant Symphony No.1. The performance makes the veteran the first-ever Asian film composer to debut a Western classical symphony in London.
Fondly referred to as Raaja, the 82-year-old composer presented his symphony along with the illustrious Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Mikel Toms.
Many fans who attended the event took to their social media handles to express their excitement.

Ilaiyaraaja recorded the symphony, Valiant, with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Earlier, the composer had shared behind-the-scenes footage, offering a glimpse at the recording of the symphony.
Meanwhile, earlier today, the composer received a grand welcome at the Chennai airport as he returned home after his symphony performance in London. The composer was warmly received by political and cultural figures, including Tamil Nadu Minister Thangam Thenarasu, BJP State Vice President Karu Nagarajan, and VCK functionary Vanni Arasu. BJP’s Karu Nagarajan and VCK’s Vanni Arasu, also extended their heartfelt greetings to Ilaiyaraaja, celebrating his exceptional career.
Speaking to the media, IIlaiyaraaja thanked his supporters, especially his fans in London. “Thanks to everyone. You all sent me off with smiling faces, which made the event hugely successful. The love I received from the fans during the Symphony was overwhelming. Every moment there was filled with appreciation from the audience,” he said.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest Indian music composers, Ilaiyaraaja was born as R. Gnanathesikan in 1943 in Pannaipuram, Theni, Tamil Nadu. With thousands of chartbusters in an illustrious career spanning over four decades, Raaja’s work has had a deep impact in the cultural and emotional fabric of southern India.
Ahead of his London event, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin greeted the ‘maestro’ at his residence and said that the composer has blended with the lives of the Tamils living across the globe and that his debut symphony performance would take the top spot in his list of achievements.
