Imtiaz Ali Uncertain About Sequels to Iconic Films Love Aaj Kal and Jab We Met

Renowned filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has often captured audiences’ hearts with his unique storytelling in films such as ‘Love Aaj Kal’ and ‘Jab We Met’. Amidst growing anticipation, Imtiaz Ali has provided insight into the possibility of sequels for these beloved films. During a promotional stint for his upcoming biopic ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, starring the talented Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, the director has expressed his hesitancy regarding the creation of further installments to his hit films.

While engaging in a candid conversation with Pinkvilla, Ali chuckled as he dispelled current rumours, stating emphatically, “No (laughs). No Love Aaj Kal 3 and no Jab We Met 2 as of now.” Although open to the idea of sequels, Ali admits there’s no concrete plan in place. “I don’t know whether I should make a sequel. But I never say never, though there are no plans at present. Let’s see what happens,” revealed the director, who is eager to embark on new projects with three scripts ready to be brought to life.

The industry’s adoration for Imtiaz Ali is palpable, as fans have vividly resonated with his cinematic narratives. Despite the second installment of Love Aaj Kal not replicating the success of its predecessor, the mere notion of a Love Aaj Kal 3 or a Jab We Met 2 stirs excitement among cinephiles.

Imtiaz Ali is breaking norms by venturing into the digital space with his latest film ‘Chamkila’ being slated for a direct release on the streaming giant Netflix from April 12. This marks a significant transition for an Imtiaz Ali production, diverging from the traditional theatrical release route. Reflecting on this move, Ali shared his belief in embracing new endeavours. This pivot to an OTT platform for the director is a testament to the evolving landscape of film distribution.

During the preparation for ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’, Ali recounted an initial reluctance to cast the actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, harbouring doubts regarding Diljit’s fit for the character. However, after engaging with Dosanjh, Ali’s perspective shifted dramatically. “The moment I spoke to him, it was just like a different chapter, and now it’s a sure shot thing, and now I really can’t imagine anybody else doing it,” he said, signifying his ultimate confidence in Diljit’s portrayal.

The film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ is a biopic that delves into the life and legacy of the eponymous Punjab music legend. Chamkila’s story is a gripping narrative of a man who, rising from the throes of poverty, became a beacon of hope and resonated deeply with the masses through his music in the 1980s. His brimming talent and growing popularity did not come without a cost, as it spurred resentment, leading to his tragic assassination at the youthful age of 27.

As we await the arrival of ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ on digital screens, the question of sequels to Imtiaz Ali’s former cinematic triumphs looms on the horizon. The director’s current ambivalence leaves room for fans to ponder over what could be while anticipating his upcoming ventures. With three new scripts at the ready, it appears that, for now, Ali is channeling his creative energies towards fresh cinematic landscapes rather than revisiting past stories. Regardless of his next step, Imtiaz Ali’s imprint on Indian cinema, with its rich amalgam of complex characters and relatable narratives, will continue to be celebrated and adored by audiences both on the silver screen and beyond.
