Junaid Khan Discusses Dramatic Debut in ‘Maharaj’: A New Star in the Making

Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by the illustrious Aditya Chopra, the Hindi film ‘Maharaj’ introduces Junaid Khan, the son of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and producer Reena Dutta, in a role that is both gripping and profound. Junaid portrays the real-life 19th-century social reformer Karsandas Mulji in this historically rich social drama. Touted as an inherently dramatic film, ‘Maharaj’ marks Junaid’s entry into the Hindi film industry almost four decades after his father’s debut as a romantic hero in the 1988 classic, ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’.

The storyline of ‘Maharaj’, described by Junaid as contributing to its dramatic essence, dives into complex historical events. It revolves around an 1862 libel case involving the social reformer Mulji and a prominent Vaishnavite religious leader. The narrative delves deep into social issues and reform movements of the 19th century, delivering its message with sensitivity and depth. The film’s release, albeit low-key and marked by minimal pre-release promotion, delighted audiences on Netflix.

Reflecting on his first major film role, Junaid remarks, “I don’t know about it being an unconventional debut because YRF is a big banner, and Sid sir wanted me to be a part of this film. The story is inherently very dramatic, and I’ve been involved in theatre since 2017. Sid sir asked me to come and test for the film. Convention or unconventional wasn’t a concern for me.” Junaid has been honing his acting skills at the Los Angeles-based American Academy of Dramatics and Arts for three years before performing in Mumbai theatres since 2017.

While discussing whether a romantic story would have been a safer debut, Junaid said, “Producers and directors probably didn’t see me in romantic dramas. You get the work you are chosen for, and this script was truly lovely. The medium is vast, and there is no guaranteed protection in films.” Junaid emphasizes that the world of films offers diverse roles and experiences, indicating a broad range to explore beyond conventional romantic tales.

The film did encounter obstacles ahead of its release. A petition was filed in the Gujarat High Court by members of a Vaishnavite sect, causing a delay due to concerns of potential religious offense. The high court eventually allowed the release after ensuring the film did not target any particular religion. Junaid expressed relief over the resolution, highlighting the sensitivity with which the film was made. “It’s a sensitive topic, but Sid sir and Adi sir handled it very carefully.

. Incidents before the film’s release were out of context, but it all ended well. The film wasn’t intended to hurt anyone, and I believe it hasn’t hurt those who have seen it,” he added.

‘Maharaj’ also features talents such as Jaideep Ahlawat, Sharvari, and Shalini Pandey. Moreover, it draws inspiration from Saurabh Shah’s Gujarati novel of the same name. Initially set for a Netflix release on June 14, the film’s debut was postponed and finally released quietly amidst legal resolutions. Junaid described the overall experience as rewarding and enlightening, with legal issues resolved sooner rather than later.

Junaid, already working on two more films, one with Aamir Khan Productions and another with Phantom Films, expressed his excitement for future projects. “Currently, I’m in Delhi shooting for a project. There’s more to come, but I’m keeping busy on stage in September. The way ahead is packed with work,” he shared, reflecting his dedication to his craft.

Siddharth P Malhotra, the director known for ‘Hichki’, shared his passion for the subject matter upon encountering the novel and its theatre production. “The story, although not widely known, holds popularity in Gujarat,” Malhotra says. He identifies the narrative as a “David vs. Goliath” battle, symbolizing the clash between a powerful establishment and a youthful reformer challenging deep-seated ideologies. Despite foreseeing the film’s potential to stir controversy, Malhotra remained steadfast, ensuring the film’s intentions were respectful and authentic.

Malhotra elucidated, “The community is involved in the film as writers and actors. My approach has always been respectful. Even within my family and wider community, we didn’t anticipate any controversy before the release.” He emphasized the importance of letting the audience see the film for themselves to understand the context, convinced of the film’s integrity.

The entry of Junaid Khan into the Hindi film industry with ‘Maharaj’ stands out as a significant moment, blending historical gravitas with sensitive storytelling. As he navigates his career with two more projects on the horizon, the dramatic and impactful tale of Karsandas Mulji in ‘Maharaj’ establishes Junaid as a promising actor poised to carry forward a rich cinematic legacy.
