Kannada actor Lasya Nagaraj looks forward to interviewing Vinothraj at Berlinale

A fresh face to the silver screen, yet a familiar name to the fervent audiences of Colors Kannada, Lasya Nagaraj steps gracefully into the limelight. A flourishing career trajectory that began with the mega series “Padmavathi” has seen this young talent evolve not just as an actress but also as an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer. Her journey took a vibrant turn after her participation in the 2017 reality show “Dance Dance”, setting the stage for her big-screen debut in the Kannada film “Asatoma Sadgamaya”.

Lasya’s ascent in the film industry has been marked by her lead roles in esteemed projects including Vijay Anand’s “Krishna Talkies”, “Mangalvaara Raja Dina”, and “Vedha”. With her eyes set on a bright horizon, she is also awaiting the release of Arun Kumar M’s “Life is Beautiful”.

Always inclined towards grasping the nuance and craft behind the camera, Lasya expressed her fascination for the cinematic world in an engaging conversation from Toronto – her current abode as she pursues film production at Yorkville University. “I wanted to understand and study every aspect of filmmaking,” she revealed, illustrating the kind of artist who appreciates the filmmaking process holistically. Once back in India, Lasya plans to delve deep into a film project shrouded in mystery and thereafter, she intends to navigate the realms of direction and production.

Ghosting beyond her educational endeavors, Lasya has earned the prestigious opportunity to represent Yorkville at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, which embarked on February 15 and will unfurl its cinematic excellence until February 25. Out of a competitive selection process involving 2000 students, she was one of only four chosen to promote the university at this global cinematic conclave.

As an emissary of both her institution and South Indian cinema, Lasya’s arrival in Berlin is imbued with cultural pride. “I feel strongly about my roots,” she stated, her excitement palpable at the thought of the festival. Her schedule features a compelling interaction with director Vinothraj, whose Tamil film “Kottukkaali” is anticipated to witness a stellar premiere. Vinothraj’s debut film, “Pebbles” (2021), bagged the prestigious Tiger Award at the 50th International Film Festival of Rotterdam. Lasya will also speak with Anna Ben, who breathes life into the film’s protagonist, Meena. Beyond interviews, Lasya will offer her insights on South Indian film practices and the art of moviemaking.

One of the anticipated highlights for Lasya at the Berlinale is witnessing cinema legend Martin Scorsese as he is honored with a lifetime achievement award. As an ardent film aficionado, Lasya harbors the aspiration to mingle with the echelon of actors, directors, and notably, women of color who have carved a niche for themselves in international cinema.

Growing up with a penchant for films, Lasya’s voyage as an actor only intensified her affinity for world cinema. The exquisite tapestry of global storytelling enticed her habitual presence at Indian film festivals. “Cinema is more than just a medium of entertainment,” she mused, as she contemplated the exploration of diverse cultures and cinematic practices.

With the educational wings she is currently spreading at Yorkville University, Lasya envisions a fusion of Western filmmaking techniques with her own artistry. Her ambition isn’t limited to acting but extends towards a collaborative synergy between English and Kannada cinema. In Lasya’s perspective, world cinema transcends barriers, and she dreams of embracing an international facet as both an actor and a producer while staying true to her cultural roots.

Lasya, who has also dabbled in short films, cherishes the format for its intensity and brevity. She sees no disparity in the commitment required, whether in a five-minute narrative or a feature-length film. “That, is the real test for a writer,” she affirms, emphasizing the ubiquitous nature of an actor’s craft across various mediums. As this star on the rise prepares to cast her glow on Berlinale, the international cinematic community beckons with open arms, ready to embrace Lasya Nagaraj’s luminous talent and boundless aspirations.
