Kriti Sanon Speaks Out on Gender Bias in Film Industry Amid ‘Crew’ Success

Amidst the hearty laughter and applause that ‘Crew’ has been generating among its audience, leading actress Kriti Sanon has taken the opportunity to shine a light on a troubling aspect of the film industry—the undue criticism directed at female leads when movies don’t perform as expected.

Kriti Sanon, alongside co-stars Tabu and Kareena Kapoor, has been garnering acclaim for her role in the comedic caper ‘Crew’, which satirizes the trials and tribulations within the airline industry. Despite the film’s success, Kriti Sanon has been candid in her recent interview with Zoom TV about the unfair backlash women often face in the cinematic world.

“It’s just very sad. At times, I do come across really hurtful comments,” shared Sanon, reflecting on the vitriol that sometimes plagues social media and public forums. She staunchly defended the collaborative nature of filmmaking, emphasizing that the outcome of a film is the result of a collective effort and not the burden of a single individual. “The success or failure of a film is not solely the responsibility of one person. It involves the entire team,” she said.

Choosing to rise above the negativity, the actress expressed her intention to simply “ignore all of this and let my work speak because nothing else really matters.” This stoic approach that Sanon advocates is one that she applies not only in her career but in broader contexts as well — noting that women are often faulted unfairly, “not just in films but in many cases, even in sports matches.”

Sanon shared a further piece of wisdom by reminding that trolls should not dictate one’s worth. “Trolls are trolls, and you can’t pay too much attention to them,” she advised.

‘Crew’ has struck a chord with moviegoers, using humor to navigate the complexities that three women face within the embattled airline industry. The film sees the leading ladies transform into savvy air hostesses with questionable intentions; their antics range from petty theft of in-flight snacks to concocting elaborate schemes to rake in substantial profits—all while elevating the glamour amid the chaos.

The film’s engaging narrative and strong performances have put it on the verge of a box office milestone, anticipated to soon surpass the coveted 100 crore mark. Producer Ekta Kapoor revealed an impressive worldwide gross of 94.58 crore after just eight days since its release.

The production hails from the combined efforts of Balaji Telefilms and Anil Kapoor Film & Communications Network. Originally set for release on March 22, the premiere of ‘Crew’ was strategically postponed to avoid competing with two other much-anticipated films — ‘Madgaon Express’ and ‘Swatantra Veer Savarkar’.

Kriti Sanon’s standpoint reflects an important conversation about gender bias in entertainment and beyond, setting a tone of resilience and focus on the collective creation that is the heart of cinema.

As the film ‘Crew’ continues its successful cinematic journey, it serves as more than just a source of uplifting entertainment. It stands as a testament to the fortitude and talent of its cast, particularly the women who bring life to their characters and often, unwittingly, find themselves the scapegoats when narratives around success and failure are constructed in the reel and real world.
