‘Malaikottai Vaaliban’ trailer: Mohanlal is a ray of hope in Lijo Jose Pellissery’s period spectacle

The entertainment landscape buzzed with excitement as the trailer for “Malaikottai Vaaliban,” featuring the illustrious Mohanlal, was released this Thursday by the production team. Directed by the acclaimed Lijo Jose Pellissery and penned by PS Rafeeque and Pellissery, the narrative is set to unfold on cinema screens across the land on January 25.

From the first glimpse, it is evident that Pellissery has spared no effort in crafting visuals of grandeur, taking audiences through the echoes of a region’s valiant struggle to break the chains of British colonial oppression. The opening voiceover, believed to be by actor Hareesh Peradi, sets a somber yet defiant tone, stating, “There’s no ecstasy like that of victory. I was lost in mirth, unaware of the treachery hidden in that moment. When you get carried away, you become oblivious to treachery. Today, the Mangody rung wields deceit not sportsmanship.”

The trailer escalates swiftly, revealing the brutal silencing of dissent by colonial authorities until a tipping point is reached. It is at this juncture that the hope of the oppressed turns towards a single man destined to rise and lead their rebellion – portrayed by none other than Mohanlal, who steps in as the harbinger of freedom and hope.

An extensive shooting schedule of approximately 130 days brought the movie to life against the picturesque backdrops of Rajasthan, Chennai, and Puducherry. Alongside Mohanlal, the film showcases talent like Sonalee Kulkarni, Katha Nandi (appreciated recently in “Thalaikoothal”), Danish Sait, Manoj Moses, and Manikandan Achari, all in key roles.

Pellissery, known for his meticulous attention to detail, has once again collaborated with a trusted team for the technical aspects of the film. Madhu Neelakandan helms the cinematography, Prashant Pillai orchestrates the musical scores, and the editing is adeptly managed by Deepu Joseph.

Shibu Baby John, Achu Baby John, Vikram Mehra, Siddharth Anand Kumar, MC Philip, and Jacob Babu have come together to produce “Malaikottai Vaaliban” under the banners of John & Mary Creative, Max Labs, and Century Films.

Mohanlal, revered for his prior performance in Jeethu Joseph’s “Neru,” teases a promising future with projects like the Netflix anthology “Olavum Theeravum,” the Jeethu Joseph-helmed “Ram,” the sequel to “Lucifer” titled “Empuraan,” “Kannappa” with Vishnu Manchu, Kannada venture “Vrushabha” directed by Nanda Kishore, “Rambaan” with Joshiy at the helm, and his eagerly awaited directorial debut “Barroz.”

Lijo Jose Pellissery’s reputation as a visionary director has only been solidified by previous works such as “City of God,” “Angamaly Diaries,” “Jallikattu,” and “Churuli.” His latest release before “Malaikottai Vaaliban” was “Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam,” which starred the legendary Mammootty.

The anticipation that this trailer has stirred within the realms of Malayalam cinema is palpable. A story of defiance, resilience, and the undying spirit of freedom is set to grace the silver screen, promising yet another cinematic treasure from the remarkable duo of Mohanlal and Lijo Jose Pellissery. As the nation awaits with bated breath, “Malaikottai Vaaliban” gears up to etch its name in the annals of film history as a spectacle of epic proportions.
