Melodies for a Cause: Thiruvananthapuram to Host Concert Honoring Golden Oldies

Ten years ago, a group of enthusiasts who thrived in the vibrant era of rock and roll in the swinging sixties and seventies came together to revive and celebrate the music that defined their youth. Naming themselves Hard Day’s Night (HDN), these men and women began organizing concerts in Thiruvananthapuram, showcasing classic hits and offering platforms for budding bands to showcase their talents. This group not only honored the music they cherished but also shared it with an eager audience, creating a nostalgic ambiance that resonated with many.

Among the founding members of HDN, Tommy Cherian reminisces about their journey, noting a particularly memorable event—the celebration of Woodstock’s 50th anniversary. This concert was a significant milestone, featuring performances by local bands and aligning closely with HDN’s mission to keep the spirit of rock and roll alive.

“Recently, a serendipitous encounter occurred when one of our members attended a concert by Rear Admiral (retired) Nirmala Kannan,” Tommy shares. “Her repertoire included some of the biggest hits from our time. This sparked the idea to organize a concert featuring her in Thiruvananthapuram. To add a touch of personal connection, her husband, Vice Admiral (retired) Bhagavatheswaran Kannan, has roots in Thiruvananthapuram.”

On June 8, Nirmala Kannan will headline a charity concert titled “Hope and Harmony” at the esteemed Trivandrum Club. Following her performance, musicians from HDN will also take the stage, promising an evening filled with cherished melodies and harmonic nostalgia. The event is not just a musical celebration; it carries a noble cause as well.

Sankar Krishnan, a management consultant and HDN member, reveals that they have chosen to channel the concert’s proceeds towards the 50-year-old Rotary Institute For Children In Need of Special Care in Thiruvananthapuram. With over 100 students, the institute caters primarily to children from economically challenged backgrounds.

The concert will commence at 6:30 PM with a special recital by the children of the institute, setting a heartwarming tone for the evening. Following this, at 7 PM, Nirmala Kannan will take the stage, captivating the audience with her renditions of timeless hits. From 8:30 PM onwards, HDN musicians will perform, ensuring the night is brimming with musical nostalgia. The event will conclude with dinner, allowing concert-goers to mingle and share their experiences.

Music enthusiasts have a golden opportunity to enjoy some classic oldies while supporting a meaningful cause by purchasing passes for the event. This concert promises not only to be a auditory delight but also a beacon of hope and support for a community in need.

Tommy Cherian’s journey from listener to organizer encapsulates the essence of HDN’s mission—preserving the spirit of a golden musical era while fostering community and support for noble causes. The serendipitous discovery of Nirmala Kannan’s talent has given HDN’s endeavor a fresh perspective, intertwining personal narratives with collective nostalgia.

The endeavor transcends mere entertainment, weaving together the threads of community, nostalgia, and charity.
