Prasar Bharati Collaborates with Assam Government for Documentary on Ahom General Lachit Borphukan

The state-run broadcaster Prasar Bharati, in partnership with the Assam government’s Cultural Affairs department, has set its sights on producing a documentary series centered on the life of Bir Lachit Borphukan, a revered general of Assam’s Royal Army. This ambitious project seeks to bring to light the exploits and legacy of one of Assam’s most venerated historical figures.

The collaboration was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on Monday in Guwahati. The event was marked by the presence of several key dignitaries, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Doordarshan Director General Kanchan Prasad. The signing of the MoU represents a significant milestone, underscoring the commitment of both parties to bring this historical figure’s life story to a broader audience.

The documentary series, comprising 52 episodes, will be produced in both Hindi and Assamese, ensuring that it caters to a wide demographic. Moreover, the series will be available on national platforms such as DD National and DD Assam. Plans are also afoot to make the series accessible on a proposed OTT platform, with dubbed versions in various other languages to follow. This approach aims to ensure that the inspiring story of Lachit Borphukan does not remain confined to just one region but reaches audiences across India.

Speaking at the MoU signing event, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the importance of accurately and sensitively portraying Lachit Borphukan’s life and achievements. He highlighted that this project marks the first time the Assam state government has collaborated with Prasar Bharati on a documentary of this scale. Sarma expressed his enthusiasm about showcasing the valor and tactical genius of Lachit Borphukan, whose leadership thwarted Mughal expansion in Assam under Emperor Aurangzeb.

Lachit Borphukan is a name that resonates with pride and valor in Assam’s history. A distinguished general of the Ahom kingdom, he is best known for his leadership in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where his strategic acumen led to a decisive defeat of the Mughal forces.

The state government’s active role in this project reflects its commitment to honoring the heroes of the past and educating future generations about their contributions.

The involvement of Prasar Bharati, with its extensive network and experience in broadcasting, adds a layer of credibility and expertise to the project.
