Prestigious Padma Bhushan Bestowed on Mithun Chakraborty Amidst National Luminaries

The Indian film industry was met with joyous acclaim this Monday as actor Mithun Chakraborty received one of the nation’s highest honors, the Padma Bhushan, from no less than President Droupadi Murmu. The ceremony, a momentous occasion at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, saw the presence of other esteemed guests including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, as they recognized the contributions that have enriched the field of arts in India.

Chakraborty, a veteran thespian whose body of work has resonated deeply with the Indian populace, expressed a profound sense of gratitude for the prestigious accolade. He shared his sentiments in an interaction with ANI, saying, “I am very happy. I have never asked for anything for myself from anyone in my life. I am very happy because when someone receives so much respect and honour… it’s the happiest moment.”

The news of his being selected for the Padma Bhushan took Mithun by complete surprise, as he recalled the moment with a candid reflection: “When I received the call informing me that I was being awarded the Padma Bhushan, I was silent for a minute because I hadn’t expected it… because it’s a big thing. But I didn’t expect it. I am happy. Thank you to everyone on the committee who selected me.”

Cherished by millions as ‘Mithun Da,’ the illustrious actor’s journey to stardom began with his debut in the film ‘Mrigayaa’ in 1976. His diverse skill set has not only entertained but also captivated audiences across several generations. His breakout role as a Santhal rebel fetched him his first National Film Award for Best Actor, setting the stage for a remarkable career that would also see him win two additional National Film Awards for ‘Tahader Katha’ and ‘Swami Vivekananda.’

However, his contributions weren’t confined to impactful acting; he was equally recognized for his dynamic dance moves in hit songs such as ‘I Am a Disco Dancer,’ ‘Jimmy Jimmy,’ and ‘Super Dancer,’ etching an indelible mark on the cultural fabric of the country.

Mithun Chakraborty’s recognition came alongside other renowned artists honored at the same ceremony. The esteemed President also conferred the Padma Bhushan upon legendary singer Usha Uthup, celebrated for her distinctive voice and contribution to music which transcends linguistic and cultural barriers. Her impact on the arts was illustriously honored amidst reverent applause.

Further adding to the luminaries, this year’s list of Padma Shri recipients included Bhajan singer Kaluram Bamaniya, Bangladeshi vocal maestro Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, and the talented Gopinath Swain. In a grand gesture of recognition for her contribution to Indian classical dance, Bharatnatyam dancer Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam was decorated with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.

The Padma Awards ceremony highlighted the nation’s commitment to acknowledging the artistic and cultural endeavors that have elevated India’s stature on the world stage. These illustrious figures, through their exceptional work, have weaved threads of extraordinary talent, drive, and passion into the tapestry of Indian heritage. As new and veteran artists alike were commemorated, an air of pride and celebration swept across the halls of the Rashtrapati Bhavan and around the nation, signaling a resounding appreciation for the arts that shape the collective spirit of India.
