The Shanghai International Film Festival, established in 1993, is accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations. Over the years, it has carved a niche for itself as a reputable platform for filmmakers around the world, offering them the spotlight to showcase their work to a diverse and international audience.

‘Dunki’ features an impressive ensemble cast starring Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, and Boman Irani among others. The film is a collaborative presentation by JIO Studios, Red Chillies Entertainment, and Rajkumar Hirani Films, produced by Hirani and Gauri Khan. The script, co-written by Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani, and Kanika Dhillon, delves into the poignant and timely issue of immigration.

The intriguing title ‘Dunki’ refers to the “donkey journey,” a vernacular term denoting the perilous and often arduous routes that individuals take to migrate to other countries. This theme resonates deeply with current global social concerns, and the film is already receiving applause for bringing such a significant issue to the cinematic foreground.

Released on December 21, 2023, ‘Dunki’ has seen immensity in its initial reception, further establishing Shah Rukh Khan’s continued dominance at the box office with three consecutive hits. The actor’s riveting performance in ‘Dunki’ has been widely praised, and his on-screen chemistry with Taapsee Pannu is an added treat for movie lovers.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Hirani was asked if the narrative of ‘Dunki’ bore any resemblance to an earlier shelved project of his, ‘Munnabhai Chale America.

The characters in the story, upset by his comments, decided to go to America and bring Bush to India. It was a satirical take on a specific political scenario, differing greatly from the message of ‘Dunki’.”

The global recognition that ‘Dunki’ now enjoys reflects a broader trend of Indian cinema being celebrated across the world. Films like ‘Dunki’ are crucial as they weave local yet universal stories, captivating audiences transcending cultural and geographical boundaries.

Hirani’s films are celebrated for their compelling narratives and emotional depth.
