Raveena Tandon shares RGV failed to recognise her on sets of ‘Shool’

In an industry where the glitz and glamor of Bollywood often overshadows the intricate relationships and behind-the-scenes anecdotes, veteran actress Raveena Tandon offers a peek into a rather surprising incident from the sets of her critically acclaimed film ‘Shool’. The actress, who has been garnering praise for her latest series ‘Karmma Calling’, recently shared an intriguing tale involving filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, the producer of ‘Shool’, who initially doubted her fit for a particular role in the movie.

While ‘Shool’ became a significant film in Tandon’s career, paving the way for different character portrayals, it seems that the journey to her casting in the movie was filled with unique obstacles. Despite the film’s eventual success and Tandon’s well-received performance, the producer, Ram Gopal Varma – fondly known as RGV – was skeptical about casting her.

Revisiting memories from that time, Tandon recounted her experience to IANS, explaining how the director of ‘Shool’, E. Nivas, was utterly convinced of her suitability for the role of a Bihari housewife. Yet, it was Varma who could not envision her in such a starkly different avatar, especially given her previous dance numbers like ‘Akhiyon Se Goli Maare’. Varma’s scepticism stemmed from his personal rapport with Tandon and his predefined visual perception of her screen presence.

Despite Varma’s hesitations, his dear friend Tandon was undeterred and shared how E. Nivas, alongside the scriptwriter Anurag Kashyap, were staunch advocates for her casting. With confidence in Tandon’s versatility, E. Nivas stood firm on his decision to proceed with Tandon and prepared for a promotional shoot that would soon result in a surprising and memorable incident for both the actress and the producer.

On the day of the promo shoot, the transformation into character was so complete that when Tandon greeted Varma on set, he merely nodded with a nonchalant smile, not recognizing the actress. Tandon, dressed in a modest cotton saree and makeup that complimented the simplicity of her character, initially took Varma’s reaction as a sign of his disapproval. However, when Varma emerged from the washroom and finally realized the woman he had just casually passed was none other than Tandon, he was taken aback. His shouted exclamation, “Oh my God, Ravs, it was you!” came as a revelation of his initial failure to recognize her, thus affirming the transformative ability of Tandon’s acting skills.

This amusing yet telling episode underscored the transformative power that actors hold—to step beyond their off-screen personas and into the lives of the characters they portray. For Tandon, it wasn’t just about proving her ability to pull off the role but also about demonstrating the sheer range of her talent to a friend and a prominent figure in the industry.

Fans of Raveena Tandon can now see her in a different light in the series ‘Karmma Calling’, currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, as she continues to challenge herself with diverse roles, much like the one in ‘Shool’, which remains a testament to her versatility and commitment to her craft.

The recollection of this episode serves as a reminder of the unexpected hurdles and triumphs actors face in their careers. Despite initial reluctance from certain quarters, talent and determination often shine through, earning actors not just roles that challenge them but also industry respect and accolades for their performances.
