Relive the Arabian Nights as Union Christian School Transforms Museum Theatre with Aladdin

The tale of Aladdin, a classic story beloved across generations and cultures, is set to captivate audiences yet again in an exciting live musical production. This enthralling story of transformation, love, and a dash of magic, which has been enjoyed through various mediums including comics, books, cartoons, live-action films, theatrical renditions, and even video games, will be brought to life on stage by the talented students of Union Christian Public School and Union Christian Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Under the expert direction of the renowned Chennai-based director and actor Michael Muthu, the play promises to deliver an enchanting experience.

Michael Muthu, known for his flair in theatrical storytelling, explains that the choice of Aladdin was driven by the students’ enthusiasm for the beloved Disney story. He shares, “The children were absolutely thrilled with the idea of performing Aladdin. We started rehearsals some months ago, and now, with over a hundred participants involved across cast, singers, and crew, this production is shaping up to be one of our largest endeavors.”

A project of this scale has its complexities, especially considering that many involved are new to theater. “It is the first time on stage for a substantial number of our cast members, and likewise for our teacher crew members. This brought a unique set of challenges to the table,” Michael acknowledges. To maintain a streamlined and efficient production process, the team was divided into 21 specialized departments such as set design, lighting, props, music, costumes, and projections. This approach not only eased the management of the production but also encouraged collaboration and learning among participants.

One of the most intriguing elements of the play is its technical demands. Michael remarks, “This is undoubtedly one of the most technically challenging plays I have ever directed. Creating the illusion of a genie entering a lamp, and incorporating numerous special effects, required meticulous planning and execution.” The anticipation builds as audiences wonder whether they will witness the magical flight of Aladdin’s carpet on stage—a detail Michael leaves tantalizingly undisclosed for now.

The rehearsal process has been as dynamic and magical as the story itself. Michael collaborated with choir master Ebenezer Arunkumar for the musical elements, ensuring the timeless Disney melodies resonate with the audience, while dance mentor John Britto infused energy and vibrancy into the choreography. Initially, dancers, singers, and actors rehearsed separately to refine their performances. It was only in the last couple of weeks that these elements were integrated, creating a unified and thrilling production.

The play features a diverse setting, unfolding across nine different locations on stage, each contributing to the immersive storytelling. “Our backstage is bustling, and it is critical that we operate like a well-oiled machine to ensure each transition is seamless,” says Michael, emphasizing the importance of teamwork both on and off the stage.

For Michael, theatrical arts are more than just entertainment. He believes they are indicators of societal health. “The arts act as a societal barometer; they flourish when communities thrive and grow. Beyond their cultural value, theater provides students with invaluable opportunities to build confidence and acquire new skills,” he asserts.
