Rima Das’ ‘Village Rockstars 2’ to Compete for Kim Jiseok Award at Busan International Film Festival

Filmmaker Rima Das’ highly anticipated sequel, Village Rockstars 2, has been officially selected to compete for the prestigious Kim Jiseok Award at the upcoming Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) 2024. This notable event in the cinematic world will unfold from October 2 to October 11, bringing attention to eight compelling films in the Jiseok Competition section. Remarkably, Village Rockstars 2 stands as the sole Indian feature making it to this exclusive list of contenders.

Village Rockstars 2 is the much-awaited follow-up to Das’ celebrated 2017 film Village Rockstars, which received international acclaim and numerous accolades, including the National Award. The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and went on to become India’s official entry for the Academy Awards 2019. The selection of its sequel for the Kim Jiseok Award underscores the enduring impact and excellence of Das’ work in Indian and world cinema.

According to an official press release, Das expressed her excitement and gratitude for this international recognition. “Village Rockstars will always hold a special place in my heart, and I cherish the love and recognition it received. I’m thrilled that Village Rockstars 2 is premiering at Busan,” the multiple award-winning director remarked in a public statement.

The original Village Rockstars narrated the inspiring tale of Dhunu, a spirited 10-year-old girl who dreamt of becoming a rock star despite challenging socio-economic conditions. This sequel, while connected to its predecessor, stands independently with its narrative focusing on Dhunu’s evolving relationships with her mother, nature, and music. “While it’s a sequel, this film stands on its own, delving into Dhunu’s relationship with her mother, mother nature, and music. I dedicate this film to all the young people with talent and dreams but limited resources to achieve them. I am hopeful that just as audiences embraced Village Rockstars, they will embrace this film as well,” Das added.

Set against the backdrop of rural Assam, Village Rockstars 2 promises to continue its predecessor’s legacy by offering an authentic portrayal of life, dreams, and resilience in a remote Indian village.

The Kim Jiseok Award, established in 2017, is dedicated to the memory of Kim Jiseok, a co-founder of the BIFF who was known for his tireless efforts in discovering and nurturing Asian talent in the film industry. The award is presented to two outstanding films that reflect the contemporary status of Asian cinema, thus elevating the profile of filmmakers and their works on a global platform. It is a significant recognition that places Rima Das in the company of Asia’s most visionary directors.

This year’s competition is expected to be particularly fierce, given the diverse and high-caliber entries from across Asia.

The selection of Village Rockstars 2 for this award is a testament to Das’ unique storytelling prowess and her ability to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers through her art. The film’s premiere at BIFF will mark a significant milestone, not just for Das but for Indian cinema as a whole, spotlighting its richness and the talent that continues to emerge from the region.

With the Busan International Film Festival just days away, anticipation is building among film enthusiasts and critics alike. BIFF has long been a crucial event on the international film circuit, offering a platform for new and established filmmakers to showcase their work.
