Rishab Shetty’s Stellar Triumph: Twin National Awards Illuminate Kannada Cinema’s Future

Actor-director Rishab Shetty celebrated a momentous achievement for Kannada cinema on August 16, 2024, as his film “Kantara” clinched two prestigious National Awards. Rishab emerged as the Best Actor for his electrifying performance in the film, while “Kantara” itself was honored with the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment accolade. The director’s reaction to his dual success was one of heartfelt joy and humble acknowledgment of the transformative power of cinema.

“In the film industry, they say one Friday can change everything. In my case, one film (Kantara) has changed everything,” Rishab noted during a press conference shortly after the award announcements. He further elaborated on the almost serendipitous creation of “Kantara,” stating, “I continue to believe that Kantara wasn’t made. It just happened.”

Rishab’s journey to this pinnacle of cinematic recognition was not without its challenges and moments of self-doubt. Initial reports mentioned that Malayalam superstar Mammootty was also in contention for the Best Actor award. Addressing the speculation, Rishab expressed his respect and admiration for Mammootty, “He is a legendary actor. I am blessed to have been in the race with him.”

This is not Rishab Shetty’s first brush with the National Awards. He previously won acclaim for his third directorial venture, “Sarkari Hiriya Prathamika Shaale, Kasaragodu” (SHPSK), which triumphantly took home the Best Children’s Film award under his banner, Rishab Shetty Films. Reflecting on his career trajectory, he shared personal insights into his evolving relationship with acting, highlighting that “Kantara” was his first major acting role in his own directorial project. “This award feels special, especially when I look back at the days when I had begun to lose interest in acting,” he revealed.

The success of “Kantara” is seen as a significant milestone not just for Rishab but for the broader landscape of Kannada cinema. The film’s victory underscores a growing recognition and appreciation for regional films on the national stage.
