Theatre enthusiasts in Mysuru and across Karnataka have reason to celebrate as seasoned theatre director Satish Tipaturu has been appointed as the new director of Rangayana, the renowned theatre repertory in Mysuru. The announcement, which comes as a significant development in the state’s cultural sphere, was made by Minister for Kannada and Culture, Shivaraj Tangadagi. Alongside Tipaturu’s appointment, directors for five other prominent theatre repertories in Karnataka were also named.
Satish Tipaturu, whose induction is set to take effect on August 14, steps into a role that has been notably vacant for several months. The directorship of Rangayana in Mysuru had been unoccupied ever since the Congress party’s ascent to power in Karnataka in May 2023. This void was created when the former director, Addanda Cariappa, tendered his resignation following the BJP’s defeat in the Assembly elections.

Despite initially pursuing an education in computer science at Kalpatharu Technical College, his passion for theatre soon took precedence. Tipaturu then sought professional training at Abhinaya Taranga School of Arts in Bengaluru and further honed his skills by obtaining a diploma in theatre arts from Neenasam in Heggodu.
Over the last quarter-century, Satish Tipaturu has made substantial contributions to the theatre world as an actor, director, and educator through his organization, Bhoomi Theatre. His illustrious career features a blend of dramatic performances, directing endeavors, and educational initiatives aimed at fostering appreciation for the dramatic arts. Tipaturu’s research on ‘Evolutionary bases of theatre in our memoirs’ earned him a prestigious fellowship from the Drama Academy, reflecting his academic prowess and dedication to advancing theatre studies.
Through Bhoomi Theatre, Tipaturu has been instrumental in organizing various training camps, drama festivals, and seminars, further enriching the theatre culture in Karnataka.
. His role as director and resource person for a year-long playwriting camp for selected children stands as a testament to his commitment to nurturing young talent.
Tipaturu’s repertoire as an actor includes notable plays such as “Haggada Kone,” “Sambhashivana Prasahasana,” “Ondu Payanada Kathe,” “Sahebaru Baruthare,” and “King Lear.” In his directorial ventures, he has showcased remarkable creativity and insight in productions like “Chammarana Chaluki Hendathi,” “Godegalu,” “Neeli Kudure,” and “Hudukata.”
The appointment of Tipaturu is anticipated to bring a fresh wave of dynamism and innovation to Rangayana, Mysuru. His extensive experience and profound understanding of theatre make him an ideal candidate to lead one of Karnataka’s premier cultural institutions. The theatre community and Rangayana patrons are eager to witness the new director’s vision unfold, potentially shaping a vibrant future for theatre in Mysuru.
Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi emphasized the significance of these appointments, underscoring the government’s ongoing commitment to bolstering the arts and culture sector in Karnataka. The other theatre repertories that have received new directors will also benefit from this renewed focus on artistic excellence and cultural preservation.
The theatre scene in Karnataka is poised for a renaissance, with seasoned professionals like Satish Tipaturu leading esteemed institutions. As Tipaturu prepares to assume his directorial responsibilities, there is palpable excitement about the new chapter in Rangayana’s storied history. His tenure promises to be marked by a blend of scholarly depth, creative ingenuity, and an unwavering passion for theatre arts.
With these strategic appointments, Karnataka reaffirms its dedication to nurturing and expanding its rich cultural heritage, ensuring that institutions like Rangayana continue to thrive and inspire future generations.
