In a unique blend of bravery and cinematic artistry, “Amaran,” an impactful new film gracing theaters this Deepavali, delves deep into the life and legacy of Major Mukund Varadarajan. The tale, while centered on the urgency of patriotism and personal sacrifice, also offers a heartfelt portrayal of human values through the lenses of director Rajkumar Periasamy, featuring the prolific actor Sivakarthikeyan.
The origin of this cinematic journey goes back to 2014 when Rajkumar Periasamy, then an aspiring filmmaker full of curiosity and zeal, stumbled upon a profound video. It portrayed an army man teaching the impassioned Tamil song “Achamillai Achamillai” by revered poet Subramania Bharati to his three-year-old daughter. This single act of instilling patriotic fervor at such a young age left a lasting impression on Rajkumar.
The army man in question was none other than Major Mukund Varadarajan, who subsequently became the subject of Rajkumar’s fascination and respect. Unfortunately, Major Mukund’s story met a tragic end during counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir, a harrowing incident that affirmed his commitment to duty. In recognition of his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award. “Teaching that song to his daughter, without the knowledge of his predetermined fate, encapsulates the essence of who he was,” reflects Rajkumar, highlighting both the major’s professional and personal pursuits.
“Amaran” elevates the narrative of the Major beyond an emblem of national heroism, offering an intimate glimpse into his life and roots. From the corridors of Madras Christian College to the first encounters with his future partner, Indhu Rebecca Varghese—portrayed by the evocative star Sai Pallavi—the film weaves through the Major’s formative years. It highlights his development not only as a dedicated soldier but as an inspiring individual who exemplifies life’s grander narratives. Rajkumar notes, “Cinema thrives on larger-than-life experiences, and the life of army personnel is immersed in such grandeur. Understanding Mukund the soldier requires comprehending Mukund the human.”
Sivakarthikeyan’s involvement was serendipitous yet rooted in respect. His admiration for the armed forces kept him from the start, propelling his willingness to transcend his comfort zone to depict such a nuanced character.
. With Kamal Haasan producing “Amaran,” following a compelling narrative pitch by Rajkumar, the film’s foundation was solidified. Recalling Kamal Haasan’s reaction, Rajkumar mentioned, “Kamal was so touched that he expressed a wish to offer thirty years of his life to such a noble spirit.” This sentiment encapsulates the film’s aspiration to deliver a nuanced human tale backed by a talented ensemble.
The role of Indhu, portrayed by Sai Pallavi, serves as the emotional core of the narrative. Her character was depicted with a commitment that reportedly demanded contractual agreements to ensure her moments on screen were preserved, signaling her pivotal influence. According to Rajkumar, “the saga of Major Mukund is inseparable from Indhu’s contribution as his moral supporter and life partner.” This acknowledgment enhances the narrative’s richness and depth, linking the destinies of the two individuals fiercely.
The production process took the team to Kashmir, one of the film’s most significant stages, where portions of Major Mukund’s courageous story unfolded. Instead of serving merely as a backdrop, the picturesque and politically turbulent region is depicted as a character in and of itself, substantiating the chronicle’s authenticity and power. “I recall our first day of shooting on May 4, 2023, at the headquarters of the 44 Rashtriya Rifles, marked by a heartfelt tribute,” says Rajkumar. He emphasizes the experience, describing the strategic yet challenging terrain, undoubtedly critical to bringing the story alive. He reflects on the relentless assistance from the stationed soldiers, whose presence fortified the filming process despite the site’s volatile environment.
As Amaran’s release on October 31 approaches, audiences are set to witness not just a film, but an evocative storytelling phenomenon bridging history, emotion, and national pride. The narrative promises to honor the legacy of Major Mukund Varadarajan, ensuring his valor and values continue to resonate within the hearts of those who watch, offering not just entertainment, but an invitation to reflect deeply on the essence of sacrifice and commitment. “Amaran” stands ready to become more than a footnote in Indian cinema, positioning itself as a tribute to heroism infused with poignant sincerity.
