Sundance 2024 | Two Indian co-productions bag awards

The 2024 Sundance Film Festival, a pinnacle event celebrating independent cinema, has become a stage of triumph for two Indian co-productions, “Girls Will Be Girls” and “Nocturnes,” each earning well-deserved accolades. The festival, which unfolded in the mountainous backdrop of Park City, Utah, brought to light diverse narratives from across the globe, with these two films capturing both critical praise and the jury’s attention.

“Girls Will Be Girls,” the inaugural production venture of the dynamic actor-couple Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal, emerged as a dual award winner. Directed by the insightful Shuchi Talati, the film received the Audience Award for World Cinema Dramatic Competition, propelling it to the forefront of global recognition. The film’s heart and soul, as embodied by lead actor Preeti Panigrahi, was honored with the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting. This coming-of-age drama unfolds within the confines of a boarding school nestled in a quaint Himalayan hill town in northern India, chronicling the rebellious journey of Mira, a 16-year-old protagonist whose experiences intertwine with her mother’s past unresolved quests for identity and freedom.

The project is the fruit of a collaborative effort, reflecting a melting pot of international filmmaking cultures, featuring production by Chadha and Fazal’s Pushing Buttons Studios, and associate productions by Blink Digital, Crawling Angel Films, and Dolce Vita Films. This Indo-French partnership has set a precedent for storytelling that transcends boundaries and echoes universally relevant themes.

Reverberating with joy over the film’s resounding success at the film festival, Chadha and Fazal released a joint statement, expressing their astonishment at the “overwhelming response” their first production received. This milestone reinforced their faith in the transformative power of storytelling and the necessity to advocate for diverse narratives that can resonate on a global scale. The acting duo’s personal foray into production delivers a message: opportunity doesn’t always knock; sometimes, you must build the door. The critical and popular recognition earned by “Girls Will Be Girls” stands as motivation to continue breaking new ground in cinema.

Shuchi Talati, riding high on the film’s achievement, relayed that working on “Girls Will Be Girls” was profoundly rewarding. She lauded Richa Chadha for fiercely safeguarding this narrative and expressed hope that the film’s themes provoke essential discourse about the seldom-explored dimensions of adolescence on screen.

Another film that drew praise under the festival’s spotlight was “Nocturnes,” directed by Anirban Dutta. This India-US co-production was conferred with the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Craft, an honor signifying the film’s exemplary execution. Set in the dense foliage of the Eastern Himalayas, “Nocturnes” offers an intriguing lens into a hidden natural world, an exploration brought to light by two vigilant observers who uncover the enigmatic beauty of the nocturnal wilderness.

This groundbreaking documentary represents a collaboration between Dutta’s Metamorphosis Film Junction and the US-based Sandbox Films, merging the storytelling capabilities and perspectives of both Indian and American filmmaking spheres.

The Sundance Organisation, a nonprofit dedicated to uncovering and empowering independent artists while curating a platform for audiences to discover their work, presented the 2024 edition of the Sundance Film Festival with an unwavering commitment to diverse cinematic expression. As the festival draws to a close, the resonant success of Indian cinema continues to ride the waves of acclaim, showcasing the country’s burgeoning narrative prowess on the international film landscape.
