Swara Bhasker Stands in Solidarity with Victims Post Hema Committee Report Findings

In a significant and evocative statement, actor Swara Bhasker has expressed her unwavering support and solidarity with the women who have spoken out about sexual exploitation in the Malayalam film industry following the release of the Justice Hema Committee report. This extensive report has shed light on the deep-seated issues within the industry, resonating strongly with the systemic problems faced by women in showbiz not just in Kerala but globally.

Taking to Instagram to share her sentiments after thoroughly reading the 233-page report, Bhasker, who is renowned for her forthright views on critical issues, voiced her concern over the challenges women face in a male-dominated industry. The actor was the first from the Hindi film industry to publicly address this emerging issue, akin to Kerala’s pivotal #MeToo moment.

“Are other language industries in India even talking about such things? Until we don’t face the uncomfortable truths we all know exist all around us, the brunt of existing abuses of power will continue to be borne by those who are vulnerable,” Bhasker wrote. Her post reflects not only her dismay at the findings but also her personal connection to the challenges highlighted, describing the content of the report as “heartbreaking” yet “familiar.”

Swara Bhasker’s commentary underscores the persistently patriarchal nature of the entertainment industry. She points out that showbiz is deeply entrenched in a power dynamic that favours men, labelling women who speak out as troublemakers. This sentiment was echoed by survivors and corroborated by the 233-page government-appointed panel’s findings, detailing various allegations of exploitation and harassment.

The genesis of the Hema Committee report traces back to the 2017 assault case involving actor Dileep, following which the Kerala government convened the panel to study gender inequality and sexual harassment in the industry. Despite its release on August 19, the report’s revelations have only now triggered a widespread response, with many in the industry sharing their own harrowing experiences.

Bhasker’s reflection on Instagram highlighted the industry’s discomfort with disruptions. “Every day of production-shoot days but also pre and post-production days are days when the meter is running and money is being spent. No one likes a disruption. Even if the disruptor has raised her voice for what is ethically correct. It’s so much more convenient and financially practical to just carry on,” she noted.

At 36, Bhasker brings insightful experience from her career in Hindi cinema, starring in notable films like “Tanu Weds Manu,” “Nil Battey Sannata,” and “Veere Di Wedding.” She criticized the industry’s feudal character, comparing successful actors, directors, and producers to demi-gods, noting how their misdeeds are often overlooked. This cult of silence contributes to the normalization of predatory behavior and creates an atmosphere where sexual harassment becomes ‘the way things are.’

The starlet also pointed out a paradox within the industry. As power dynamics are sharply skewed, many newcomers and women cannot be held entirely accountable for navigating within a pre-existing toxic framework. Instead, Bhasker insists that those who hold power and create such environments must be held accountable.

In an empowering message, she extended gratitude and admiration towards the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) and the victims who shared their stories, providing solace and solidarity to all affected. “You are heroes and you are doing the work that people in positions of greater power ought to have done already: Respect and solidarity with you!” Bhasker proclaimed.

The scandal has compelled significant repercussions within the Malayalam film industry’s leadership. On Tuesday, celebrated actor Mohanlal, who was serving as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (A.M.M.A), resigned along with other top officials amid intense backlash. This came as several women actors, including those from Bengali cinema, went public with their allegations of sexual harassment against notable personalities, including director Ranjith and actors Siddique and Mukesh.

Swara Bhasker’s public support not only underscores the seismic upheaval occurring in Kerala’s film industry but also calls for a broader conversation and reflection within the entire Indian cinematic landscape, pressing for systemic and perceptual changes to root out exploitation and harassment.
