The Legacy of Singham: Unpacking the Iconic Line ‘Aata Majhi Satakli’ and Future Hopes

In a nostalgic revisitation of cinematic history, director Rohit Shetty and actor Ajay Devgn recently attended a re-release event for their blockbuster film ‘Singham,’ sparking a journey down memory lane with enthusiastic fans. The event, held on Friday, brought into focus not only the achievements of this hard-hitting cop drama but also reflected on its cultural impact. It gave Shetty and Devgn a chance to share fascinating insights and anecdotes from the making of the film, including behind-the-scenes stories of how some of the movie’s most beloved moments came to be.

One topic that inevitably surfaced during the discussion was the film’s iconic phrase ‘Aata Majhi Satakli,’ which has since become embroidered in the fabric of pop culture. Both Shetty and Devgn admitted they were initially taken aback by the phrase’s colossal fame. According to them, the line was inscribed rather casually in the script, intended to emphasize the Marathi roots shared by the film’s hero, Bajirao Singham, and the antagonist, Jaikant Shikre. “We had just written the line because both the characters are Maharashtrians, and it blossomed into an iconic line. He (Ajay) says that line just once in the film,” Shetty clarified, pointing out that the villain is primarily responsible for its recurrence throughout the movie.

Ajay Devgn echoed Shetty’s surprise at the phrase’s reception. “At that moment, it was just a line,” Devgn reminisced about his experience shooting the film. “You deliver a lot of lines, and you don’t know which ones the audience will gravitate towards. While doing it, it was just a line, and then it became a cult line.” It’s a boundless testament to the unpredictability of filmmaking—how creativity, audience aspirations, and cultural phenomena can meld to elevate a seemingly simple moment into cinema history.

The conversation then turned to another unforgettable element associated with the film—the ‘Singham’ pose, which has been equally celebrated by fans. This powerful gesture, synonymous with bravery and righteousness, has become a visual icon of the ‘Singham’ franchise. Shetty attributed the birth of this symbolic stance to renowned choreographer Ganesh Acharya. “Nothing was planned,” Shetty recalled.

. “We were just crafting a normal mass film amidst our roster of comedies, having produced three Golmaals and ‘All The Best’ and were in process with ‘Bol Bachchan.’ We endeavored into a hardcore mass action film.” This venture into the action genre was evidently both a creative departure and a testament to the versatility both Shetty and Devgn aimed to express.

Currently, all eyes are set on the future as Shetty and Devgn gear up for their forthcoming odyssey: ‘Singham Again.’ During the event, Rohit Shetty provided a sneak peek into what fans could expect, especially concerning the climactic scenes. “We had a team of around 1,000 people shooting the climax,” Shetty disclosed, detailing an international confluence of talent. “The team from South Africa was there, which shot ‘Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi’ for us, the team from Bangkok was there, and my team was there, so we all came together for the climax. I think the kids will have a terrific experience now when they watch ‘Singham Again’ climax. I am very proud of how it has turned out.”

The recently unveiled trailer for ‘Singham Again’ promises yet another thrilling ride, this time drawing connections to the revered Hindu epic, the Ramayana. The film promises a star-studded cast including Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Tiger Shroff, Arjun Kapoor, and Jackie Shroff. Standing as the fifth installment in what has become known as Shetty’s Cop Universe, ‘Singham Again’ embarks on a compelling journey as Bajirao Singham, essayed by Ajay Devgn, endeavors to reclaim his wife, Avni Kamat (modeled after Sita), portrayed by Kareena Kapoor Khan, from Arjun’s exploit. The parallels drawn from the Ramayana are deliberate, aimed at striking a resonant chord with audiences who admire narratives infused with timeless tradition and heroism.

With Diwali marked as its release date, ‘Singham Again’ is positioned to fortify the franchise with its dynamic storytelling and visual grandeur. Furthermore, this film emerges within the wake of another Ramayana adaptation—the Prabhas and Kriti Sanon starrer ‘Adipurush’—creating a competitive dialogue around mythological reconstructions in contemporary cinema. By leveraging the rich narrative veins of the Ramayana, Shetty aims to secure widespread audience engagement, betting on the story’s enduring allure.

As ‘Singham’ returns to the big screen, it provides not just a taste of nostalgia but also a reminder of the origins of its success—a seemingly simple line and a pose that captured the imaginations of millions, urging them to look forward to the newest chapter with the same fervor and anticipation.
