Tragic Helicopter Crash Claims Life of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi


In a tragic incident, a US-manufactured Bell-212 helicopter, which has a longstanding reputation for reliability albeit its age, crashed in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province on Sunday, the 19th of May. The accident claimed the lives of several high-ranking officials, including President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

The helicopter was on its way from a dam inauguration ceremony on the Aras River, which borders Iran and Azerbaijan. This ceremony was attended by Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev. The convoy consisted of three helicopters; while the other two, carrying Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian and Housing and Transportation Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash, reached their destination safely, the helicopter carrying President Raisi met with disaster. The crash occurred near Jolfa, approximately 375 miles (600 kilometers) northwest of Tehran, in the midst of heavy fog, resulting in a hard landing and the loss of all aboard.

Veteran Russian helicopter test pilot Vadim Bazykin provided insights into the potential causes of the crash. He remarked that helicopters, in general, can operate effectively in various weather conditions. However, he emphasized that the crew’s experience is a critical factor, stating that very few pilots possess the skillset required to navigate through severe weather and challenging terrains, particularly mountainous regions.

Bazykin elaborated on the unique challenges of flying in mountainous areas. He noted that pilots must contend with turbulence caused by unevenly heated slopes. As parts of the mountains receive varying amounts of sunlight, significant differences in air movement between the sunny and shady slopes can create strong and unpredictable air currents. This makes flying particularly demanding and necessitates a high level of skill and anticipation from experienced pilots.

Bazykin highlighted his own experience while transporting high-ranking Russian officials. He always prioritized choosing experienced pilots capable of making decisive judgments, including the crucial decision to abort flights in poor weather. This, he explained, underscores the need for pilots to sometimes refuse to proceed despite previous successful flights in similar conditions—a likely reference to the fatal overconfidence that might have affected the crew of Raisi’s helicopter.

He further mentioned that the pilots of Raisi’s helicopter should have determined a safe altitude when flying into dense fog.

. He stressed that it appears the helicopter was flying lower than the recommended altitude, which generally ranges up to 300-500 meters. According to Bazykin, the pilots should have assessed the feasibility of landing in such foggy conditions and, if deemed unsafe, should have opted for an immediate return.

When addressing potential mechanical issues with the Bell-212 helicopter, Bazykin dismissed these as a likely cause for the crash. Despite the helicopter’s age, it is considered very reliable and, considering its status as a presidential aircraft, it likely had updated engines for enhanced safety. The expert concluded that technical failure should not be considered the primary cause of this tragic incident.
