Usha Uthup Returns to the Stage After Husband’s Death: “Sitting at Home and Crying Makes No Sense”

Renowned Indian singer Usha Uthup, recently struck by tragedy with the loss of her husband, Jani Chako Uthup, has opened up about her decision to continue performing. Jani, aged 78, passed away due to a cardiac arrest in Kolkata last month. He experienced discomfort while watching television at home and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. Jani leaves behind his wife Usha, his son Sunny, and his daughter Anjali.

In an emotional interview with Hindustan Times, Usha referred to her husband’s death as a “terrible moment” that brought immense sadness into her life. However, she remains resolute in her decision to return to her passion for music, and she commits to performing live once again. On August 24, Usha Uthup is slated to take the stage alongside Sushant Divgikar in Delhi, embracing her desire to continue entertaining and connecting with her audience despite her personal loss.

“It took a lot of courage for me to come back to doing live shows just after a span of a few days [after her husband’s passing]. What could I have done? They were shows I had to fulfill,” Usha explained. She went on to articulate her belief that dwelling in sorrow would do her no good, “I don’t believe in sitting at home and crying because it makes no sense. He [her husband] was the one who helped me grow and pursue my career. He never interfered in my life and always said, ‘Go and sing!’ I am doing that and it has brought me a lot of peace.”

Supporting her decision, Usha emphasized the healing power of music in her life and how it has helped her navigate through the dark times. “I am okay as long as I am singing. It is the only thing that makes me forget about those horrible things,” she shared. Usha described music as a unifying force that brings joy and a smile to everyone’s face, adding, “I have always been a positive thinker. I am looking forward to doing many more big public shows.
