Valerie Chane Tef of Akoda Infuses Bengaluru with Island Rhythms

“My set list is a mix of songs from my latest album and the one before that, but I also have a new song, un cadeau (a gift) for the people of India,” says Valérie Chane Tef of Akoda, a band hailing from Reunion Island. Titled ‘Bal Zétwal,’ Valérie’s song for India is a manifestation of her deep commitment to world music and its diverse cultures. Akoda, the name of their band, is rooted in the Yoruba religion, symbolizing the intricate connection they share with multiple cultural traditions.

Reunion Island itself is a melting pot, blending four major religions and cultures — Indian, Chinese, French, and African. “My music reflects this diversity. It’s a mix of these influences, stemming from my personal experiences, inspirations, and aspirations,” explains Valérie. She composes music to encapsulate this rich tapestry of her life into an auditory experience that speaks volumes about her multifaceted background.

Although this marks her third visit to India, it was Valérie’s debut performance in Bengaluru, attending to Fete De La Musique’s World Music Day celebrations. Despite the chaotic traffic, she found the Indian Music Experience Museum to be “simply amazing,” garnering inspiration and awe.

Joining Valérie on this musical journey are percussionist Eric Perez and bassist Thomas Boude, together forming Akoda — a band renowned for their unique interpretation of jazz creole. “Sharing my music with the public is paramount to me,” says Valérie, reminiscing about her formative years when she consciously decided to take the stage at around 23 years of age.

Early Musical Journey and Jazz Influence:
Valérie began her musical journey at the tender age of seven, delving into classical piano. During her university days in Bordeaux, France, she discovered her passion for jazz. “I immediately fell in love with jazz during my time in France. My teacher from Madagascar, along with my initial tour in Morocco with South American musicians, greatly broadened my understanding of world music,” she elaborates, acknowledging her exposure to a variety of global musical influences.

Even with this eclectic array, Valérie remains deeply connected to her roots. She sings predominantly in Creole, her native language, and only recently began integrating lyrics into her compositions. “Four years ago, I started adding words to my music to express my identity and articulate who I am,” Valérie explains. This decision not only underscores her individuality but also highlights the scarcity of Creole singers on the global stage.

The Essence of Her Music:
While most of her tracks revolve around the universal theme of love, Valérie emphasizes that “loving” encompasses her family, humanity, and everyday interactions. “Sharing my everyday life experiences through music is my way of connecting with people,” she articulates.

Discussing her bandmates, Valérie states, “Even though we met recently, we instantly connected on a similar vibe. It’s crucial to be in sync with your bandmates, and we have achieved that harmony.” She commends Eric as a celebrated drummer who has collaborated with eminent figures in the French jazz scene, and praises Thomas for his youthful passion and stage maturity.

Valérie often collaborates with various French musicians, noting that while pop and rock genres are widely embraced, jazz has historically catered to a niche audience. Her musical tastes span from traditional music, represented by Danyel Waro and Ziskakan, to contemporary artists like Billie Eilish and Margot Reisinger of Portugal, to jazz legends such as Mike Davies, John Coltrane, and Ella Fitzgerald.

A Global Connective Force:
“I adore world music, and it resonates through my work. This could be why Indian audiences connect with my music. Despite its vast diversity, India shares a unique bond through shared musical experiences,” she reflects.

Valérie firmly believes in the power of unity and cultural harmony. She feels the world needs peace and mutual cooperation. “We must share and stay together; our power lies in unity. We are ineffective if we choose isolation,” she asserts.

Looking ahead, Valérie is excited about potential collaborations with Indian artists and is eager to impart her musical knowledge to interested individuals. Her enthusiasm knows no bounds as she opens avenues for cross-cultural engagements. Valérie can be reached for collaborations or lessons at [email protected] or [email protected].
