Bengaluru FC Dominates Mohun Bagan SG to Secure Third Straight Win

Bengaluru FC continued their impeccable run in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season by securing a powerful 3-0 victory against Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Saturday. This triumph in Matchweek 3 keeps Bengaluru FC’s streak of perfect wins intact, cementing their position at the top of the table with three victories in three matches. Conversely, Mohun Bagan SG finds themselves in the sixth spot with a mixed record of one win, one loss, and one draw.

The match saw goals from Edgar Mendez, Suresh Singh, and the ever-reliable Sunil Chhetri, decisively earning maximum points for the Blues. The ISL press release highlighted these key moments that sealed the Mariners’ fate.

Right from the kickoff, Bengaluru FC exhibited an aggressive approach, applying high pressure from the outset. The trio of Mendez, Chhetri, and Venkatesh perpetually tested the Mohun Bagan SG defenders. The Blues almost scored an early lead when Vinith’s splendid free-kick found Rahul Bheke in the box within the first five minutes. Nevertheless, Bheke’s header did not significantly challenge goalkeeper Vishal Kaith.

Bengaluru’s relentless offensive pressure bore fruit in the ninth minute when Mendez capitalized on a well-executed corner. A pinpoint header from Nikhil Poojary directed the ball to Mendez, who expertly directed it past Kaith, giving the hosts an early advantage.

The home team established control and doubled their lead by the 20th minute. Mendez, after making a dynamic run down the right wing, delivered a perfect cross to Chhetri. The veteran forward deftly flicked it towards Suresh Singh, who fired it into the net with authority.

Mohun Bagan’s defense faltered once again seconds later. Chhetri intercepted the ball from Apuia in the midfield and attempted a long-range shot, only to be superbly denied by Kaith.

Continuing their dominance into the second half, Bengaluru FC nailed the final goal that sealed their victory. In the 51st minute, Dippendu Biswas fouled Mendez in the penalty area, and Bengaluru was awarded a spot-kick. Chhetri took the opportunity to etch his name in the history books by converting the penalty and becoming the ISL’s highest scorer with his 64th career goal.

Even though the Mariners made multiple changes in an effort to swing the momentum, including bringing on Jamie Maclaren in the 66th minute, they struggled to break through Bengaluru’s solid defense. Attempts by Aldred and Cummings came close but lacked the precision needed to get past goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

In a bid to salvage something from the contest, Mohun Bagan SG pushed men forward but found themselves increasingly vulnerable to counter-attacks by Bengaluru FC. Suresh Singh orchestrated a swift counter, feeding Sivasakthi Narayanan in the box. However, Kaith denied what would have been a fourth goal for the Blues with an excellent save.

Sunil Chhetri’s performance was instrumental in securing the win for his team, not just with his historic goal but also by setting up Suresh Singh’s goal. Chhetri completed 10 of his 16 passes and created two scoring opportunities, demonstrating his all-round capability on the pitch.

Looking ahead, Bengaluru FC is set to face Mumbai City FC on October 2, traveling away for what is sure to be another thrilling encounter. On the other side, Mohun Bagan SG must regroup quickly as they prepare for a high-stakes Kolkata Derby against Mohammedan Sporting Club on October 5.

This narrative emphasizes Bengaluru FC’s tactical prowess, individual brilliance, and cohesive team performance. All information is corroborated from official ISL sources. The consistency and resilience shown by Bengaluru FC right from the first whistle underscore their intent to challenge for the title this season. Keeping up with such form, the Blues look like serious contenders who can maintain their position at the summit of the league standings.
