Gundecha Education Academy Triumphs in U-12 Football Finale

In a stunning display of defensive prowess and youthful determination, Gundecha Education Academy from Kandivli clinched the boys under-12 second division title in the Maharashtra State Schools Sports Association (MSSA) inter-school football tournament. The victorious team achieved an outstanding feat by not conceding a single goal throughout the tournament. In a nail-biting final held at Azad Maidan on Saturday, Gundecha overcame a spirited challenge posed by Cathedral and John Connon School from Fort, registering a 3-1 victory via a dramatic penalty shootout.

The final encounter was an exhibition of tactical football, with Gundecha maintaining their clean slate courtesy of a rock-solid defense. Throughout the regulation time, the Gundecha boys displayed nerves of steel as they fended off multiple attacking plays, ensuring the tie remained goalless until the penalties. The stout defense, anchored by players like center-back Pratham Patel, held firm against Cathedral’s offensives, delivering an impeccable performance that culminated in their title victory.

Pratham Patel emerged as one of the heroes during the penalty shootout, alongside team captain Atharv Kapoor and Samik Kothari, who all successfully converted their penalty attempts to secure the win. On the opposing side, Cathedral’s chances dwindled as they faltered under pressure, with only their captain, Aarav Bathija, managing to find the back of the net with his spot-kick.

Throughout the match, Cathedral exhibited dominance, especially in the first half, with their midfield and forward sections creating several opportunities. However, their inability to convert these chances into goals proved detrimental, as Gundecha’s resolute defense thwarted their efforts time and again. Despite Cathedral’s initial advantage in terms of ball possession and territorial play, it was Gundecha’s strategic defensive stance that held sway and eventual upper hand during the tense penalty duel.

The victory for Gundecha Education Academy marks a historical milestone. For the first time, their under-12 team not only reached the finals but also laid claim to the coveted silverware. This accomplishment reflects the structured training and strategic preparation led by coach Pratish Karande.

. Reflecting on the tournament journey, Coach Karande expressed pride in his team’s unwavering resolve and steadfast commitment on the field. “In the first half, we were under pressure, but the boys showed tremendous character by coming back strong in the second half, matching Cathedral stride for stride,” said Karande. He attributed their success to their previous semi-final win over Don Bosco, which instilled the necessary confidence and belief to excel in the finals.

Meanwhile, Don Bosco School from Borivli secured the third spot in the competition. In a tightly contested match against Campion School (Cooperage), Don Bosco eked out a 1-0 win, attributed to an early second-half goal by their captain, Rydya Lobo. This hard-fought victory secured their qualification to the tournament’s first division for the upcoming year, alongside the newly crowned champions, Gundecha.

Adding to the chorus of celebration, Gundecha’s team manager, Parag Kamble, commended the exceptional performances of their key players. Goalkeeper Kiaan Bansal, in particular, garnered special praise for his crucial save during the penalty shootout—a moment that epitomized their journey’s grit and determination. Kamble highlighted that Atharv Kapoor, the captain, emerged as Gundecha’s top scorer in the tournament while consistently leading the team with his inspiring performances both offensively and defensively.

The tournament’s outcome showcases the vigor and future potential inherent within the young footballers of Gundecha Education Academy. With a robust defensive strategy and a deft offensive approach, the team has set a high standard for school-level football competitions. Furthermore, their achievement represents a commendable synergy between coaching acumen and the players’ dedication, marking a victorious chapter in the academy’s sporting endeavors. As Gundecha savors this well-deserved triumph, their young squad sets its sights on future challenges with great optimism, ready to embrace their ascendant place in the first division next year.
