St Stanislaus Edges out St Paul’s in Thrilling U-16 MSSA Football Encounter

In a dramatic U-16 Group-C match of the MSSA inter-school football tournament held at St Francis D’Assisi ground in Borivli on Saturday, St Stanislaus (Bandra) clinched a narrow 1-0 victory over St Paul’s (Dadar). Despite being last year’s runners-up, St Stanislaus struggled to find their rhythm without two key players—captain Zidane Fernandes, a midfielder, and Ethan D’Souza, a stopper—both of whom were on a pilgrimage abroad. This absence created noticeable disjointedness within the team, making their win all the more surprising.

The Dadar boys, in contrast, showcased excellent team cohesion. They dominated the lion’s share of the attacks and created more scoring opportunities throughout the match. However, their efforts met a formidable resistance in St Stanislaus’s captain and goalkeeper, Jordan Kamble, whose outstanding performance between the posts kept St Paul’s from converting any of their chances. The Dadar team’s combined effort wasn’t enough to breach the defense of a resolute St Stanislaus.

St Stanislaus managed to break the deadlock in the 21st minute of the first half through a crucial strike from Jonathan Pires, known for his prowess in dead-ball situations. Following an indirect free-kick, Pires’s swerving shot deceived St Paul’s goalkeeper, Pranav Joshi, who made the critical error of attempting to handle the ball, deflecting it into his own net. This fortuitous goal proved to be the decisive moment in the match, securing a hard-fought victory for the Bandra boys.

Apart from the gripping matchup between St Stanislaus and St Paul’s, the day witnessed two other notable fixtures in the same Group-C category. Don Bosco (Borivli) showcased an authoritative performance, securing a comprehensive 6-0 win over St Joseph’s (Wadala). Don Bosco’s captain, Cristiano Lewis, along with Aarav Katoria, each netted two goals. Reenesh Kotian and Devesh Jadhav added their names to the scoresheet with one goal apiece, completing the emphatic victory.

Another engaging encounter featured Dominic Savio (Andheri) taking on Smt RSB Arya Vidya Mandir (Juhu).

. Dominic Savio emerged victorious with a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from strikers Vedant Devlekar and Daniel D’Souza, who each found the back of the net once, ensuring their team’s dominance over both halves of the match.

St Stanislaus’s narrow escape underlines their resilience and tenacity, even in the absence of crucial players. This victory, even though aided by a stroke of luck, demonstrated their ability to capitalize on critical moments amidst adversity. The match offered a spectacle of strategic defensive play and opportunistic scoring, making it a memorable clash for the spectators.

Don Bosco’s performance against St Joseph’s was a display of sheer dominance, highlighting the depth and strength of their squad. The contribution from multiple players like Cristiano Lewis and Aarav Katoria illustrated their attacking capability and balanced team strategy. Don Bosco’s comprehensive win has set a high standard in the tournament, marking them as formidable contenders.

Dominic Savio’s win over Smt RSB Arya Vidya Mandir also adds an interesting dynamic to the Group-C standings. Their balanced approach and effective striking from Vedant Devlekar and Daniel D’Souza underscore their potential to make significant strides in the tournament.
