Thane District Girls Claim Historic Victory in WIFA Inter-District Football Championship


In a thrilling turn of events, the Thane District junior girls’ football team emerged victorious in the WIFA Inter-District Football Championship, held at the Tarapur Vidya Mandir ground in Palghar recently. This achievement marks their first-ever junior girls’ title in the competition. A strong performance by the team ensured a 1-0 win over the formidable Kolhapur District, allowing them to continue their unbeaten streak throughout the tournament.

The triumph was a culmination of exceptional individual performances and cohesive team effort. Defender Nyasa Bondre played a pivotal role, delivering the decisive goal in the final match. She maneuvered skillfully to score from a free kick in the very last minute, securing the victory for Thane. “The competition was tough, especially the semi-final against Kolhapur. I knew it was a do-or-die situation when I was taking the last free kick; I couldn’t afford to miss. The relief and joy of scoring were immense,” Nyasa recounted, beaming with pride.

The Thane team, led by their captain and center forward Harleen Kaur, displayed remarkable consistency and skill throughout the championship. They kicked off their campaign with a stunning 22-0 victory over Nanded in the opening match, signaling their intent and capability. Following this, they dispatched Nashik with an authoritative 3-0 win in the quarterfinals.

The semi-final clash against Pune was a nail-biting encounter. Thane had to dig deep into their reserves of skill and determination. In this high-pressure match, it was Harleen Kaur’s last-minute heroics that saw them through. Her decisive goal earned Thane a hard-fought win and a place in the final. This crucial contribution did not go unnoticed. Harleen was honored as the player of the tournament, acknowledging her leadership and versatility on the field.

“It was an unbelievable moment when I got named the player of the tournament. I knew I had a chance but wasn’t the top scorer. However, my performance, especially the crucial goal against Pune, was recognized. It was a collective effort, and this award is a testament to our team’s dedication and hard work,” said Harleen.

The final match against Kolhapur District was the pinnacle of Thane’s efforts. Kolhapur, known for their resilience, posed a substantial challenge, but Thane’s disciplined defense and strategic play paid off. As the final whistle blew, the joy and elation on the faces of the Thane players were palpable. “The entire team lifted me up after the final. We hugged each other, though we didn’t have much time to celebrate as we had a train to catch. Our coaches have promised us a celebration soon,” Nyasa shared.

Nyasa, a 15-year-old Class 10 student from Euro School in Airoli, demonstrated commendable balance in managing her academic responsibilities and rigorous football training. She trains at the Football School of India (FSI) in Nerul on grass and switches to turf during the rainy season, practicing at Fr Agnel School in Navi Mumbai. “My training has been extensive, but my parents’ support has been crucial. They have always encouraged and stood by me,” said Nyasa, who idolizes football icons Lionel Messi and Kevin De Bruyne.

Harleen Kaur, the 14-year-old captain from Apeejay School in Kharghar, shared similar sentiments. “Winning this championship is beyond exhilarating. Each member of our team has contributed significantly. We’ve trained hard, and it’s fulfilling to see it all come together,” she added. Harleen’s humility and team spirit are evident as she reiterates the collective effort behind their success. Her admiration for Messi mirrors that of her teammate, Nyasa, signaling a shared inspiration that drives the team forward.

The Thane District team’s splendid run and ultimate victory in the WIFA Inter-District Football Championship have rightfully earned them accolades and admiration. Coaches Anish Pol and Victoria Gill’s diligent training and motivation have been credited as integral to their success.
